Thought for the Day

The Gopikas’ adoration of Lord Krishna is Madhura Bhakthi. The gopikasalways thought of Lord Krishna and completely surrendered themselves. They believed that all their wealth, body, mind and everything they had was all surrendered to Krishna. Whatever they did, ate or talked was all in the name of Krishna. If there was any moment of time, it had to belong to Krishna. If Krishna was not there even for a moment, they regarded themselves as lifeless. When Krishna went with the cowherds, these gopikas always worried about Him and His comfort - whether He had proper protection or not, whether He had slippers on or not, whether He had any discomfort of any kind, and so on. They were thinking of Gopala and His well-being, even when they were eating their food, resting or sleeping. Because of leading such a life, over time, they turned themselves to be One with Him.

Thought for the Day

Life is a game with fire; you must derive warmth without getting burnt. So you must constantly fight the inner battle to use the senses and the intellect wisely to secure liberation rather than get entangled in their wiles. Deepavali commemorates the victory of heavenly over hellish influences, of virtue over vice, as symbolised by the victory of Krishna over Narakasura. Your life in this world is a perpetual struggle with the down-dragging impulses and the raising impulses. The Narakasura within you can be destroyed by the constant dwelling of the mind on the Lord, as the Bhagavata relates. Only when the six foes within (lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and jealousy), which drag you down are overpowered, the flame of wisdom can shine, clear and bright. To demonstrate this today, lamps (deepas) are lit in a row on every house.

Thought for the Day

Our festivals and holy days should be observed in the right spirit, with an understanding of their inner significance. The destruction of the demon Narakasura symbolises the destruction of evil and the restoration of good. Observe Deepavali as a day for getting rid of all the bad qualities in us. Many Gopikas who were imprisoned by Narakasura were freed by Lord Krishna on that day. This implies that we must free the imprisoned good qualities within us and allow them to be manifested effulgently. As long as demonic qualities remain within people, they will be immersed in darkness. Bad qualities and thoughts must be got rid of altogether. When you realise the impermanence of the body and all the sensory experiences, you will acquire detachment (vairagya). Discharge your duties, treating the body as a God-gifted instrument for this purpose.

Thought for the Day

While Lord Krishna was growing up, one of the Gopalas would come up to Him and say, “Dear Krishna, please sing, sing to my heart’s content. Take the essence of the Vedas and pour it through your flute and play a beautiful song to mesmerise my heart.” The Gopalas regarded Lord Krishna as the ocean of love, and themselves as drops of water which have come out of this ocean of love. Their sole purpose was to take their own lives and merge it with the infinite ocean of love. So long as we hold a drop of water in the palm of our hand, it remains a drop of water; but if we take this drop of water and mix it with the ocean, the drop does not exist any more, as it loses its individuality and merges with the ocean. What better objective can there be in life beyond wanting to merge with the Lord?

Thought for the Day

To light a lamp, you need four elements - a container, oil, wick and a match box. If any one of them are missing, you cannot light the lamp. This lit lamp can, however, remove only the external darkness. How do you remove the darkness within the heart? It can be removed only by the Light of Wisdom (Jnana Jyoti). How to light the spiritual light, the light of wisdom? It needs four elements too. Detachment (Vairagya) is the container. Devotion (Bhakti) is the oil. One-pointed concentration (Ekagrata) is the wick. Knowledge of the Supreme Truth (Jnana) is the match stick. Without all the four, the light of Spiritual Wisdom cannot be got. Of the four, the primary prerequisite is the spirit of renunciation (Vairagya). Detachment is absence of attachment to the body. The ego-feeling, which makes one think of ‘I’ all the time, should be given up. Without this detachment, knowledge of scriptures is of no avail.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

If you attach yourself to the Lord through the path of love (prema), it will be possible to realise Him. God’s love is like an infinite and endless ocean. Simply because God’s love is infinite and endless, you cannot carry all of it with you. What you can carry with you will depend on the size of the pot you take. So the first thing to do is to enlarge the size of your pot, and this can be done through spiritual practice (sadhana). The first step in Sadhana, is respect for your mother. The devotion towards the mother should be such that you recognise the great love and affection with which your mother has brought you up. You must return gratitude to your mother in the form of love or bhakti. The mother will also showbhakti in the form of vatsalya (affection of mother for child), in return to the love of the child.

Thought for the Day

When you revel in the contemplation of the splendour of the Lord, nothing material can attract you. Everything this world has to offer will seem inferior. The company of the godly and the humble alone will be relished. Great saints who have sung the Grace of the Lord have realised Him in the altar of their own hearts. The unsullied love and devotion they transmitted through their songs have fertilized millions of devotees’ parched hearts. Reciting the Lord’s Name and observing their chosen spiritual practices have enabled many an aspirant to win over the Lord quickly and intimately. So strong and deep is their love and devotion that no disappointment could ever shake their faith. Ramdas, Tukaram, Meera and many others are wonderful examples of the above, and they have built the royal road of devotion for all of humanity. It is your duty now to live up to the heritage handed to you for your development by your pious forefathers.

Thought for the Day

When the moon shines in the sky, you can see it directly. You do not require the aid of a torch, or a lamp, or any other artificial light. The reason is it is possible for us to look at the moon by the light of the moon. In the same manner, if you want to be nearer and dearer to God or understand God, who is an embodiment of love, it will be possible to do so only by means of love which is His very nature. God who is the embodiment of love, is not confined to one place or country. He is present everywhere, in every nook and corner of the world. Hence everyone, including youth must love all and regard loving all beings as loving God, as God is present in every living being. Since God is selfless, you must also practice serving selflessly.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

When you cultivate faith and surrender, you will have no concern about the consequences of your actions. All your thoughts and actions will be pure, saturated with love and conducive to peace, for your actions are no longer your acts, they are His, and you will be free. Therefore cleanse your hearts and make it a clear mirror, so that the Lord may be reflected therein, in all His full splendor and grandeur. The desires that cling to the mind are the blemishes that tarnish one’s inner consciousness. Control your senses. Do not yield to their insistent demands for satisfaction. When a corpse is placed on pyre and it is lit, the corpse and the pyre are both reduced to ashes. So too when the senses are negated, the mind too disappears. When the mind disappears, delusion dies and liberation is achieved. Remember, faith in God is the best reinforcement of spiritual victory.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

To enable us to earn the grace of the Lord, there are so many different paths. The paths of wisdom (jnana), action (karma), andyoga are more difficult than the path of devotion (Bhakti). Devotion will help us reach God, be close to God, and understand the Lord and His miracles. Amongst all the other paths, the shortest and easiest path is the path of love. God is an embodiment of love. To reach God and to understand His divinity, the path of love is the best approach. Divine love (prema) is not something which is fixed either on an individual, or a community, or a specific object. It is very wide, selfless and ever expanding. It is only when we broaden our love using these principles, we will be able to understand and experience the sacred divine love from God.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Human being is not just a creature with hands and feet, eyes and ears, head and trunk; you are much more than a total of all these organs and parts. The parts in fact are only crude images from the mould. You must then be ground, scraped, polished, perfected and softened through the intellect. Then you will become the ideal candidate for Divinity, which is your real destiny. The impulses will be rendered pure and your intentions will be raised to a higher and nobler level, only if you choose to dedicate all your deeds, words and thoughts to the Lord. To accomplish this, faith in the one Supreme Intelligence, which conceived, conserves and consumes this Universe is essential. The next is to be convinced of your own helplessness and distress at your own grief. Then you will easily achieve surrender to that Supreme Intelligence. Therefore cultivate faith and surrender. Grace will then naturally flow through you into every act of yours!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

The Avatar of the Lord is the real Guru, who is far more superior and compassionate than all Gurus. He can, by the mere expression of His will, confer the highest consummation of spiritual life. Even the meanest of the mean can acquire the highest wisdom, in a trice. Such is the power of the Guru of all Gurus. A real guru will steal your heart, not your wealth. When the fullest embodiment of God comes down as a human, you too must develop the power to attract the giver of illumination to bestow His Grace on you. You must concentrate on service to the Guru and ruminate over His teachings. You must be eager to translate His teaching into daily activity and actual practices. You must fill your heart with devotion and dedicate all your skill for the actualization of the Guru’s counsel. Such a person alone deserves the title of a pupil (sishya).

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

The spiritual path is the path of detachment, of sense control, of rigorous mind training

I bring you the message that will confer strength, peace, hope and fulfillment. It may not be pleasing (priya), but it will surely be beneficial (hitha)! A patient has to take drugs and put himself through regimen that is beneficial; he cannot ask for only sweet medicines and comfortable regimen which pleases him. The Doctor knows what is best for the patient! Truly speaking, treat your body as a wound, that needs to be washed, bandaged and treated with medicine thrice or four-times a day. That is the real purpose of food and drink. To cure the disease of thirst, water is the drug. Food is the medicine to cure the disease of hunger. Detachment is the medicine to cure the disease of craving for pleasure. For the pure yearning for the Divine and the pursuit that is impelled by it, the necessary first step is a rigorous self-examination to remove all evil habits, tendencies and qualities from within.

Bagavan Sri Sri  Sri Sathya Sai Baba

If you honor your father, the father of all beings will guard you. - Baba

Many are not prepared to respect their parents. You may ask a question as to why one should respect one’s parents. Always, whatever actions you undertake, the reaction will come to you in the future. It is your duty to respect your parents for all that your parents have done for you. If today, you show respect to your parents, then your children will respect you when you grow up. If you make your parents suffer now, your children will do the same in return to you; and tears will flow from your eyes. If a student wants to lead a life of security and happiness in the future, he must undertake to lead a good life now. It is the beauty of your heart that is important. It is not the external beauty of the body that matters at all. When you have a pure and clean heart, you will have the strength to cleanse the world.

Thought for the Day

Each one of you have your own strength and weakness, foibles and fears, skills and handicaps, so, no one prescription can be suggested for all. You must proceed from where you are presently, at your own pace, according to your own inner light. But, as long as one has caught a glimpse of the Atmic Reality, of the source from which one has emerged and the goal into which one is to merge, the goal of the journey will be reached sooner or later. The fascination for the body and the senses which dominate it, and the world which feeds the senses as well as the enchantment for the vainglorious adventures in search of fame and fortune - all this will become meaningless and fade away once you receive a glimpse of that Atmic Reality either through grace or through a Guru or through some other means. One will then have instead of deha-bhranti (body attachment) which now torments him, the yearning to know and be established in the Dehi, the Divine Indweller.

Thought for the Day

Look at a piece of cloth. Truly it is a bundle of threads; and if you examine it more carefully, you will say that it is just cotton. The first stage is cotton, second stage is thread, and the final stage is the cloth. What would you do if you do not like that cloth? You remove the threads one by one and the cloth disappears! In the same manner, your mind does not have any specific form. It is simply a bundle of desires. These desires themselves come from the thoughts of your mind which can be compared to the cotton. Thus in this analogy the three stages are the cotton or the thoughts, the thread or the desires, and finally the desires constitute the mind which is the cloth. So you must try to diminish these desires as far as possible. Desires are like heavy luggage in the journey of your life. Less luggage, more comfort for you!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Life is not a simple affair! You cannot attain happiness (sukham) through comfort (sukham). The joy of release can be won only through travail and trial. It is grief that makes joy worth its while, a precious possession! Through pain, a woman achieves the joy of motherhood. Through toil, the farmer earns the coveted grain from the field. Through long days and nights of steady study, a student passes the examination and obtains a degree. It is pitch-darkness that prompts the seeker of light; it is death that lends zest to life. Deprive yourself of luxury and comfort, detach yourself from what you hold dear and near through sheer ignorance of your mind. Pine, struggle, strive ceaselessly and then you are blessed with the inexpressible Bliss of the merger of the Individual with the Universal; you win the gift of Union with the Divine (Sakshathkara).

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

The period between sixteen and thirty-two is a golden age. It is every youth’s duty to recognize every bad idea or thought that sprouts in their mind and exterminate it completely. Mind is like a mad monkey and you should not surrender to it. As soon as a thought comes into your mind, you should examine whether it is a good thought or a bad one. You should control the mind and keep it under your direction. You should not be prepared to yield to all the desires that sprout in your mind. Youth is the stage when you have all the strength to overcome the obstacles that come in your way, and control your actions and thoughts. At this stage, if you feel angry, jealous, or excited, use your full strength to control these tendencies. If you choose not to control your emotions now, will you get the strength to do it later?

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Are you aware of the grand goal of your pilgrimage on earth?

Are you aware of the grand goal of your pilgrimage on earth? Do not stray into the bylanes and wrong roads, they will only lead you to disaster. You put a lot of faith in things outside yourself and plan to derive joy from and through them. Do you not know that all joys emanate only from the spring within you? You merely envelop the outer things with your own joy, and then, you experience it as though it is from that ‘other thing!’ The recognition of your innate Divinity and the regulation of your daily living in accordance with that Truth is the guiding star for every being, which is caught in the currents and crosscurrents of strife and struggle. Without that guiding divine light (Atmajnana), life will become a meaningless farce, a mockery, a game of fools. It is the acquisition of that Self-Awareness, which will make your life earnest and fruitful.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Since ancient times people are observing external forms of worship without understanding the inner significance of festivals. Nature (Prakruti) teaches the spiritual truth about Navaratri. The entire cosmos is a temple. The Lord pervades the cosmos. Realise Sai’s love through spiritual practice (Sadhana). Sadhana does not mean adoring God in a particular place or form. It means thinking of God in all that you do wherever you may be. You may ask whether this is possible. The answer is that it is possible by dedicating every action to God. During Navaratri there is a form of worship called Angaarpana Puja. In this form of worship, all the limbs (Anga) of the body are offered to the Divine in a spirit of surrender (Saranagathi). Surrender means offering everything to the Divine and giving up the idea of separation between oneself and the Divine. Be convinced that it is the same Divine who dwells in you and in all beings - Eko Vasi Sarvabhuta-antaratma.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Navarathiri

Navaratri means nine nights. Darkness is associated with night. What is this darkness  in a human being? It is the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of the Navaratri celebrations is to enable you to get rid of darkness. When a reference is made to Devi, it signifies the unified form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. These three Goddesses together represent energy or Shakti. Shakti is the energy that represents Nature (Prakruti). Nature is made up of the three qualities,Satwa, Rajas and Tamas. Saraswathi represents Satwa guna (purity). Lakshmi represents  Rajo Guna (energy and activity) and Durga represents Thamo Guna (dullness or inertia). As Nature is made up of these three qualities (Rajas, Tamas and Satwa), to gain  control over one’s inner Nature, people worship Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi as they represent these three qualities. To secure the grace of Goddess Shakthi, you must have triple purity - purity of the heart, purity in speech and purity in action.

Thought for the Day

In moments of great distress, Pandavas were only thinking of Krishna, teaching us a lesson about the intimate connection and friendship between Pandavas and Krishna. Lord Krishna protected them as eyelids protect the eyes because of the sacred love Pandavas had for Him. He stood by them as their companion at all times, in difficult times and in good fortune, even when they were living in the forest unrecognised for a whole year. This is the meaning of true friendship. If we look at the quality of friendship in the present times, there is no evidence of true friendship. When a lake is full of water, frogs gather round; and when the lake is empty, all frogs disappear. So also, when you are prosperous and wealthy, everyone is your friend, but when your wealth disappears, no one is around. Remember, the only true friend who will continue to be with you at all times is God.

Thought for the Day

Embodiments of Love! Vijaya Dasami marks the conclusion(samapti) of the sacred Navaratri festival. Samapti confersprapti (deservedness) in every possible way. Today I bless you with the deservedness to develop selfless love. Love contains all the other human values like truth, right conduct, non-violence and peace. Whatever you do, do it with Love. Your heart is like a big tank, and senses are like taps. Fill your heart with the water of Love. Then you will experience Divine Love through all your senses. Undertake good actions from this moment. Let everybody be happy. The essence of all scriptures is: “Help ever, Hurt never.” Do not hurt even an insect, for God is present in every being. Surrender to the Lord and say, “I am Yours,” and live up to it with strong faith. God will protect you at all times and under all circumstances. I bless you to have noble feelings, join good company, give-up vices and attain Divinity.

Thought for the Day

The completion (samaptam) of the Yajna (sacrificial rite) is marked by the final offering in the ritual fire, called Purnahuti. The offering which every one of you must make in the Yajna is that of your bad thoughts, desires and actions. This is more important than anything else. Your desires seem to be ever on the increase! This clearly indicates that the spirit of renunciation (tyaga) has not developed to the slightest extent. Atleast now, should you not try to curb your desires to some extent? If there is no spiritual transformation in your way of life over the years, you would be guilty of having wasted all your energies, time and opportunities! Some day or other everyone will have to give up their material possessions. Hero is he who detaches himself from his possessions before he goes! The true meaning of Yajna Samaptam is Self-Realisation, to realise the Omni-Self that is present within and in every being.

Resolve to be in good company, speak good words, see good things and become a good person.

It is said, the same Divine dwells in all beings (Ekatma sarva bhutantaratma). Now some may have a doubt, “If that is so, then why should I not have friendship with such and such person?” When someone’s age, behaviour and thoughts are not conducive to your moral and spiritual development, you should not develop friendship with such a person. If you do so, you will also become like them. ‘Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are’, it is said. Hence be in the company of pious, good and noble people. Sage Adi Shankara in his famous treatise Bhaja Govindam declared, Satsangatve nissangatvam. Good company leads to detachment, detachment makes you free from delusion, freedom from delusion leads to steadiness of mind, and steadiness of mind confers liberation. Hence resolve to be in good company, speak good words, see good things and become a good person.

Thought for the Day

Dasara is the festival that celebrates the victory of good forces over evil energies. God has expressed Himself as the five natural elements. All creation is but a combination of these in varying proportions. You must use these abundant resources reverentially, with humility and gratitude. You know from experience that excessive quantities of wind, fire or water is injurious to health. If you drink more water than needed, it is a torture. When you inhale more air you will be suffocated and burn with excessive heat. Loud noise beyond a limit is destructive to peace. Hence realise that efficient use of natural resources is a form of worship. Nature (Prakrithi) is, in essence, Divinity itself. The universe is Divine. So tread softly and reverentially. Use them intelligently to promote your own well-being and that of the others. Use the natural resources in moderation and offer loving and intelligent service to the communities you live in.

Thought for the Day

Perpetually people are concerned about wealth, family and children, and hardly think of God. There are fleeting moments of devotion, but these are more demonstrative than genuine expressions. Unless faith in God expresses itself in a godly life, it is sheer hypocrisy. I don’t want to know that you have listened to many discourses. I want to know that you have thoroughly transformed yourselves. It is such transformation that is the mark of true devotion. If the ground is not wet, what is the use in saying there has been a downpour? ‘Sai Ram’ in words and dishonesty in thoughts is brazen deception. The greeting ‘Sai Ram’ must emanate from the depth of one's being. Develop fraternal feelings towards all. Differences of opinion can be resolved by compromise. If you give up egoistic pride you can overcome all difficulties. From now, make a bonfire of your ignorance and egoism, and develop love in your hearts. Live up to Swami's teachings and redeem your lives.

Thought for the Day

Nowadays selfishness is rampant among devotees, and they love God not for God's sake but only to get their selfish desires fulfilled. As long as selfishness prevails, the Divine cannot be understood. The Navaratrifestival should be used as an occasion to examine one's own nature whether it is human, animalistic or demonic, and strive to transform the animal nature to the human and then divinise the human. DuringNavaratri prayers, you recite "Netram Samarpayami”, stating I offer my eyes to the Lord. Does it mean you must offer your eyes? No! The real significance of the Mantra is that you think of the Divine in whatever you see or do. The true meaning of the prayers to offer your limbs to the Lord(Angaarpana Puja) are to declare that you offer yourself in the service of the Lord at all times. Hence from today, every work you do, do it as an offering to God only.

Thought for the Day

To secure the grace of the Lord, you must have purity of heart, purity in speech and purity in action. This triple purity is described in Vedantic parlance as Tripurasundari. Lakshmi, who is the embodiment of all prosperity, is represented by the heart. The mouth represents Saraswathi. Purity in action (Kriya Shuddhi) is represented by Durga. By celebrating the Navaratrifestival, you must get rid of the darkness within by cultivating this triple purity. You must also use the Navaratri celebration to revere Nature and consider how natural resources can be used properly in the best interests of mankind. Resources like water, air, power and minerals should be used wisely and not misused or wasted. Economy in the use of every natural resource is vital. Pollution of the air has many evil consequences. The significance of observances like Nagarasankirtan and bhajans is this - to fill the atmosphere with sacred vibrations and holy thoughts.

Thought for the Day

Gandhi, who was an ordinary person, was able to achieve greatness and world renown, because of the lessons in good behavior he learnt from his mother. The mother observed a vow: she would take her food only after the cuckoo sang in the morning. Once when Gandhi was a boy, the mother was waiting for a long time to hear the call of the cuckoo. Observing this, Gandhi went out of the house, imitated the call of the cuckoo and came in and told his mother that the cuckoo had sung and that she could take her food. The mother, who saw through her son's trickery, slapped him on the cheek and said, "You wicked fellow! What sin must I have committed to bear a son like you?" She felt very sad. Her grief touched the heart of Gandhi. From that moment Gandhi took a firm resolve never to utter a lie again.

Parents have the primary responsibility to mould the character of children. By giving in to excessive affection they should not give too much freedom.

Happiness and peace are not to be found in wealth, position or power. All these generate only fear and anxiety and not peace and happiness. Today even highly educated persons do not recognise this truth, but pose as devotees. Hiranyakashipu tried all possible methods to divert his son, Prahlada from being devoted to God. The child was subjected to every conceivable torture and ordeal. Unafraid, disregarding his perverse father, Prahlada held fast to the Lord, and his devotion to the Lord saved him. Prahlada declared, "He alone is a true father who leads the child to realise God." There is nothing great about being a father. No father should rejoice when a child is born. Only when people praise the virtues of his child can the father rejoice over his child’s birth. A righteous child redeems oneself and the family. Verily, they alone are good parents who bring up virtuous children.
