Share your love with everyone

He is a true devotee who considers God’s happiness as his own. He always aspires to give happiness to the Lord and does not want to cause any inconvenience to Him. You should never cause inconvenience to God in the name of devotion. Consider that God’s happiness is your happiness and your happiness is God’s happiness. Imbibe this spirit of oneness. Today most of the devotees are selfish. They have only Swartha Bhakti (devotion intended for selfish gains). They are concerned with their own happiness and not that of God's. You should see to it that your love is always pure. God is the embodiment of love. Such divine love is present in all. Share your love with everyone. This is what God expects from you.

Peace is the interlude between two wars

Life is a mosaic of pleasure and pain - grief is an interval between two moments of joy. Peace is the interlude between two wars. You have no rose without a thorn; the diligent picker will avoid the pricks and gather the flowers. There is no bee without the sting; cleverness consists in gathering the honey nevertheless. Troubles and travails will haunt you. But you must not allow them to deflect you from the path of duty and dedication. The world today is afflicted with anxiety, fear, depression, hatred, greed and suspicion. The only way the world can be set right is for man to realise his high destiny; for every man yearns for two boons - attainment of joy and escape from sorrow.

Avoid the company of Bad people

One should be constantly contemplating on the principle of Brahma Sathyam, Jagath Mithya (reality of God and impermanence of the world). One must avoid the company of bad people; and even too much friendship with the good. Attachment of this nature will drag one away from the path to God. Give up attachment to the momentary. Once you have achieved this Udaaseenata (attitude of being unaffected), you will have unshakeable Shanti (peace), self-control and purity of mind.

Full opportunity to experience and enjoy Divine

Men cannot comprehend the Formless and the Attributeless Absolute. Avatars (Divine Incarnations) appear in human form to enable humanity to experience the Formless in a form which is accessible to them and helpful to them. An Avatar assumes the form that is beneficial to and within the reach of human beings. An effort must be made to understand the nature of divinity. It is only when God comes in human form can human beings have the full opportunity to experience and enjoy the Divine.

Thought for the Day

Only by following the path of love can you experience bliss. Just as merely reciting the names of the dishes cannot appease your hunger, so too, unless you speak sweet words and do sacred actions, you cannot enjoy life’s sweetness and be happy. You are all children of immortality and embodiments of bliss. It is because you have emerged from bliss that you seek to return to that Source, the bliss. Just as fish born in water cannot live out of water, so does man always crave for happiness, wherever he is and in whatever he does. Man is restless until he returns to the bliss from whence he emerged. True bliss is not found in this world. Keep your mind always on God – only then will you have peace and happiness.

What should you do hereafter?

Who are you? The Atma. From where did you come? From the Atma. Where are you going? To the Atma. How long will you be here? So long as being engaged in sensual pursuits. Where are you? In the unreal and ever-changing world. In what form? As Anatma (that which is not Atma). What are you engaged in? In evanescent tasks. Therefore what should you do hereafter? Give these up and strive to merge with the Atma.

Thought for the Day

Sandalwood gives more and more fragrance when it is subjected to more and more grinding. The sugarcane yields juice as it is chewed more and more. Gold gets refined when it is melted in the fire. So also, a true devotee will not falter in his love for God even when he faces troubles and obstacles in his life. God tests His devotees only to take them to a higher level on the spiritual ladder.

The present is the best time in which you can discharge your duty and be of service to the person who comes seeking your help.

Whoever comes seeking service from you is the one you must attend to at that time. It is your duty to satisfy the need of that person through your service, and that will be the best work that you can do that moment. The present, when you can do something, that is the most sacred time. You do not see the future, for your eyes cannot perceive it. The past has gone and there is nothing you can do about it. Thus, the present is the best time in which you can discharge your duty and be of service to the person who comes seeking your help.

Thoght for the Day

The Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) must be vigilant not to lose his temper on trivial and petty matters, for that will retard his progress. Anger must be sublimated by systematic effort. One must resist the impulse to enter into discussions and arguments, for this breeds a spirit of rivalry and leads one towards feelings of anger and vengeance. Anger is at the root of all wrong behaviour. Hence, cultivate love towards all beings and thus keep undesirable habits and tendencies at bay.

Thought for the Day

If you wish to lead an ideal life, you have to follow the example of the Avatars (Divine incarnations). Avatars may appear in human form, but you should not equate them with ordinary mortals. In physical form, both may appear alike. But there is a fundamental difference. You should not mistake the cotton fruit for the mango. When man strays away from the path of righteousness, God comes in human form to reform him. Birds, beasts and insects lead lives according to their specific nature. It is only man who has given up all righteousness, forgotten his divine essence and degraded his humanness. The Avatar has to protect the good, reform the erring and punish the wicked.

Sound is the first attribute of God

Sound is the first attribute of God. The hymns of the Vedas constitute Naadha Brahman (God in the form of sound), which is highly potent. Even if you cannot chant the Vedas, mere listening to the recitation of the Vedas is itself capable of purifying your mind and elevating you to a higher level. Though the child does not know the meaning of the lullaby sung by its mother, it is induced to sleep hearing the tune. Similarly, listening to the chanting of the Vedas with undivided attention will confer upon you immense benefit. If you ruminate over it and practise its teachings in your life, you can imagine the magnitude of the bliss you will attain.

One who lacks sense control is worse than an animal

What is the purpose of human birth? It is not merely to eat, drink and make merry. Paropakarartham Idam Shariram (human body is meant to serve others). Man should dedicate himself to the service of society. God has endowed man with all powers. But, he is bound by the senses, which lead him to both good and evil ways. Hence, it is the foremost duty of man to make proper use of the senses. One who lacks sense control is worse than an animal. Firstly, one should get rid of one's animal qualities. Only then, can one rise to the level of the Divine.

Thought for the Day

Focus your mind on one goal and do not allow it to waver. You have to hold on to it till the very end. There is only one Divinity. Stick to any one form of God of your choice and hold firm to it. If you keep transplanting a sapling from one place to another frequently, how can it grow into a healthy tree? You have to plant it in one place and water it regularly until it grows into a strong tree. This is true devotion. If you keep changing your spiritual guides frequently, your devotion gets adulterated. Do not resort to such a course. Choose any one, and trust that God is in all.

Thought for the Day

Man is the storehouse of every mineral, metal and energy that the earth contains. He has in him electric, magnetic and several other forms of energy. Sadly, man does not realise this. There is the enormous strength of Divinity latent in him that enables him to do anything that he sets his mind on. Man's many achievements are mere glimpses of the great potential that is latent in him. All he needs is to have the will and the determination to realise this strength and potential.

How to control the mind

What is Mano-Nigraham (control of the mind)? Nigraham (control) really means being indifferent to the vagaries of the mind. It is difficult to control the mind, just as it is difficult to confine air in one's grasp. How can anyone control the mind which is all-pervading in the vastness of its range and comprehension? When it is realised that the mind is made up of thoughts and doubts, the elimination of the thoughts is the means of restraining the mind. Thoughts are associated with desires. As long as desires remain, one cannot have Vairagya (detachment). It is necessary to limit desires. When there is no restraint, excessive desire becomes an evil. It leads to misery. When we strive to control desire, in due course, it develops into Vairagya (non-attachment or renunciation).

Thought for the day

The right attitude of the devotee should be one of total surrender. As one devotee declared, “I am offering to you the heart which you gave me. I have nothing I can call my very own. All are yours. I offer to you what is already yours.” As long as this spirit of total surrender is not developed, man will have to be born again and again. One should offer one's heart to the Divine and not be content with making offerings like flowers and fruits.

God will grant you what you need and deserve

Detachment, faith and love – these are the pillars upon which peace rests. Of these, faith is crucial, for without it all spiritual discipline is empty. Detachment alone can make spiritual discipline effective, and love is what leads one quickly to God. Faith feeds the agony of separation from God; detachment canalises it along the path of God, and love lights the way. God will grant you what you need and deserve; there is no need to ask, no reason to grumble. Be content. Nothing can happen against His will.

Desires are a prision

What is the meaning of ‘Ceiling on Desires’? People become deluded by unlimited desires, and live in a dream world. It is most important to keep one's desires under control, to put a ceiling on them. People are spending too much money. Instead of spending inordinately for their own pleasure, one should be spending for the relief of the poor and the needy. This is the meaning of the ‘Ceiling on Desires’ programme. Do not make the mistake of thinking that giving away money is all that is needed, giving away to others while allowing your own desires to continue to multiply. Curtail your desires, for materialistic desires lead to a restless and disastrous life. Desires are a prison. One can be freed only by limiting one’s wants.

cleanse your heart with Love and remove ego through service.

Visions are only reflections of divine vibrations in the mind, aroused by Sadhana (spiritual practice). They are milestones, signposts; they happen on the road to the goal. They do not, they cannot accompany you right to the end. You will have to travel alone and overcome obstacles. Grace from your own self is the most important and essential help for spiritual progress. I might grant you grace without limit, but of what use can that be if your heart is not clean and if your head is full of ego? Cleanse your heart with Prema (love) and remove ego through service.

Nothing belongs to anyone

Be aware that all things belong to God. So no one can claim anything as one’s own. But people claim everything, declaring, "it is mine". Indeed, nothing belongs to anyone. People are immersed in the false and foolish concept of ownership; possessiveness is rampant in every thought and action, and that leads to the inflation of the ego. Egoism has to be utterly eradicated. Possessiveness should be banished. You came with empty hands, and you go back with empty hands.

Treat Whatever happens as good for you

Man forgets his true nature because of attachment and egoism. Man should develop unwavering faith in God. Faith should be like your life-breath, which goes on at all times without respite. Breathing goes on irrespective of whatever work you may be doing and whatever be the state of your mind. Likewise, in all situations and at all times, your faith in God should never leave you. It should not change according to whether your desires are fulfilled or not. Like your life breath, your faith should remain steady, through joy and sorrow, loss and gain, pain and pleasure. Treat whatever happens as good for you. Develop that sense of fortitude.

Thought for the day

God will respond to your prayers for succour only when you respond sympathetically to the needs of others. Life should not be wasted in selfish activities, blind to others' distress and deaf to others' groans. Treat joy and grief equally - this according to Lord Krishna is Samathwam (equanimity). Practise this equanimity - this is the way to win His Grace. You may not be rewarded materially for your compassionate acts but there is no greater reward than the joy that you derive by alleviating other's sorrow.

Thought for the Day

The grace of God cannot be won through the gymnastics of reason, the contortions of yoga, or the denials of asceticism. Love alone can win it; love that needs no requital; love that knows no bargaining; love that is paid gladly to the All-Loving; and love that is unwavering. Love alone can overcome obstacles however many and mighty. There is no strength more effective than purity; no bliss more satisfying than Love; no joy more restoring than Bhakti (devotion to God) and no triumph more praiseworthy than surrender.

Thought for the Day

As a preliminary to Seva (selfless service) you have to attain purity of heart. You must examine your motives and skills, your intentions and qualifications, and discover for yourself what you hope to achieve through Seva. You should ferret out any trace of egoism, and also the desire for fame. You have to get rid of all sense of mine and thine and burn to ashes the pride that comes from the feeling that you are offering service to someone poorer and less fortunate. Give up pride of status, wealth, scholarship and position, and practise humility, obedience, discipline and compassion.

A Loving Heart is the temple of God

Giving up narrow ideas and feelings, people should show compassion towards their fellow-beings. Compassion is the hallmark of Bhakthi (devotion). No one can hope to please God without showing Daya (compassion) towards his fellow-men. A loving heart is the temple of God. God cannot dwell in a heart without compassion. There is nothing greater in the world than Prema-drishti (vision imbued with universal love). They alone are good who see the unity in the apparent diversity. Men have to realize that they are sparks of the Divine. They have to develop sacred thoughts and lead ideal lives. They must seek to promote the welfare of society.

Education does not end with the accumulation of information; it must result in transformation of the habits, character of the individual

Education must lead to illumination; the darkness of ignorance and the dusk of doubt will flee before that splendour. Then it is easy to cultivate good thoughts and feelings in the heart thus illumined. Education does not end with the accumulation of information; it must result in transformation of the habits, character and aspirations of the individual. Knowledge has to be tested in daily life. Now, man has no inkling of the most precious heritage that he has within him. He is interested in everyone except his own self. If only he becomes aware of his self, he can have vast strength, abiding peace and great joy added unto himself.

Tlhe thoughts we indulge in shape our nature; along with others, they affect us too

We become what we contemplate. By constant thought an ideal gets imprinted on our heart. When we fix our thoughts all the time on the evil that others do, our mind gets polluted by the evil. When, on the contrary, we fix our mind on the virtues or well-being of others, our mind is cleansed of wrong and entertains only good thoughts. No evil thought can penetrate the mind of a person wholly given to love and compassion. The thoughts we indulge in shape our nature; along with others, they affect us too.

What is real and what is unreal?

Vedanta (Vedic philosophy) declares: "Brahman is Sathya (Truth); the Cosmos is Mithya (illusory)". Your primary concern must be to understand whether you are real or unreal or what in you is real and what is unreal. It is only when you have recognised the truth of your own being that you can recognise the world as illusory and your own self as the only reality. The realized person asserts: "I am Brahman". Wherefrom has this statement emanated? What does it mean? It is a spontaneous expression and not the result of a thought or feeling. The "I" is boundless Infinite. When the finite individual merges in the Infinite "I", the "I" alone remains.

Thought for the day

Deha Vasana (attachment to the body) impels one to seek physical strength and health and an attractive physique. All the efforts to make up one's face will not serve to alter its natural features. Only that which has been given by the Lord will be enduring. You must be content with that. While taking as much care of the body as is essential, you should not have excessive attachment to that which is inherently perishable and temporary. The body must be taken care of only for realizing the Divinity within. It is no doubt necessary to maintain good health as long as one lives, but obsessive concern for the body is misconceived.

Thought for the day

When the obstacles in the path of truth are laid low, deliverance is achieved. That is why Moksha (liberation) is something that can be won, here and now; one need not wait for the dissolution of the physical body for that. Action must not be felt as a burden, for that feeling is a sure sign that the particular action is ill-advised. No deed that helps your progress will weigh heavily on you. It is only when you go counter to your innermost nature that you feel it a burden. A time comes when you look back on your achievement and sigh at the futility of it all. Entrust your mind to the Lord, before it is too late, and let Him shape it as He thinks best.

Thought for the day

Brahman (God) is full of love and, in fact, is the embodiment of love. Your love should merge with this love. In fact, there is only one and no second; it is the non-dual state. The essential nature of love is sacrifice. Under any circumstance, it does not give room for hatred. It is love that drives away the feeling of separateness and promotes the feeling of oneness. Love also raises a person from the animal to the human. Prema (Love) is the Prana (Life Force) of man, and the Prana itself is Prema. One without love is like a lifeless corpse. Love and life are therefore inter-related and intimately connected.

One faith should not be considered superior and another inferior.

When there is a downpour, the water that comes down is pure. The rain falls on mountains, plains and valleys. According to the region through which the rain water passes, its name and form undergoes changes. But due to these variations, it should not be thought that the water itself is different. Based on the teachings of the founders of different faiths, having regard to the requirements of the time and circumstance of particular countries, and keeping in view the specific needs of the people concerned, certain rules and regulations were laid down. On this account, one faith should not be considered superior and another inferior. Man's primary duty is to bear in mind the sacred truths they espouse and practise them in his life.

How is happiness to be achieved?

Man should bring under his control the source of pleasure and pain. More than pleasure, it is pain that awakens the wisdom in man. If you study the lives of great men, you will find that it is out of trouble and pain that they derived wisdom. Without sorrow, there can be no wisdom. It is pain that teaches many lessons to man. Not realizing this profound truth, man pursues pleasure endlessly. No doubt, man needs to be happy. But how is happiness to be achieved? It is only when sorrow is overcome that man realizes happiness. Hence everyone should welcome sorrow in the same spirit in which he greets happiness. Pain and pleasure are intermingled. No one can separate them. Pleasure is never found separately by itself. When one is relieved of pain, one experiences pleasure.

Realise the Truth

Though axed and maimed by man, trees selflessly serve him by providing him fruits and shade. Rivers carry water to quench man's thirst and to cleanse his body. The cow also selflessly serves man by providing milk. Man should, in the first place, realize the truth that he has been endowed with the human body not for seeking his selfish ends but for serving others. Since man has gained his wealth, knowledge and skills from society, he has to discharge his debt to society by doing some good in return. A man without this supreme virtue of gratitude is worse than a cruel animal; his education and skills are a sheer waste. It is indeed by serving society that these acquire splendour and significance.

For transforming one's life, the first requisite is proper vision. This means that one should avoid seeing what is undesirable. Every man and every living being aspires to attain peace and happiness. People pursue various paths to experience the everlasting bliss. Everyone aspires to know the objective of life. But they are not able to succeed in their endeavour. One in a million will persist with strong determination and will not give up till he realises the goal. Ordinary mortals will not make any efforts in this direction as they think it is something beyond their reach. They spend their lives in the pursuit of physical and ephemeral pleasures. You are born again and again, seeing, doing and experiencing what you have already seen, done, and experienced. You should realise that you are born not to be born again. True Happiness

We see various objects in this world and are deluded that they are permanent. It is a grave mistake. Whatever is seen by the eyes is impermanent. Even our body is seen by the eyes; hence, it is also not permanent. It is a sign of ignorance to identify oneself with the body. Sath-Chith-Ananda (being-awareness-bliss) is the very nature of man. But man has forgotten his true nature and is wasting his time in the vain pursuit of fleeting pleasures. He is not able to realise the value of his innate nature. Once he realises its value and experiences it, he can reach an exalted state. In fact, he becomes verily God. Man can accomplish any mighty task when he realises his innate divinity. But man is not making any effort in this direction. The Best Way to Love God is to Love all and Serve all

The service activities that you perform and the Bhajans that you sing will not suffice by themselves. You should first give up the feeling that you are serving others. That is very important. You are serving your own self when you serve others. You should consider all as yours. In fact, all beings are but the very forms of God. Hence, service rendered to humanity is service rendered to God. All service activities are meant to foster this feeling in you. You should plunge into the field of service with selfless love. The best way to love God is to love all and serve all. Your acts of service should be suffused with the spirit of love. Ahimsa (non-violence) means not causing harm to anyone, but it is not merely refraining from inflicting injuries on others with one’s limbs or weapons. Non-violence also has to be practiced with purity of mind, tongue and body. There should be no ill-feelings, for that too is a form of violence. Jealousy on the part of a person ultimately results in his own ruin.

Once the organs of the body like eyes, ears, limbs became jealous of the tongue, saying that they make all efforts for securing food, but the tongue enjoys this. They stopped working and never sent any food. Tongue is the one that tastes the food and passes only palatable items of food inside, which is converted by the internal organs into energy giving blood. The tongue does not retain it. But for this vital part played by the tongue, the other organs would not be able to function at all. When the other organs became jealous of the tongue and stopped sending food with a view to harm it, they spelt their own ruin by such action, as they could not function when there was no food and consequently no supply of energy for these organs to function. Similarly, jealousy on the part of a person ultimately results in his own ruin.

Surrender all your actions, you will surely receive God's grace

When Bhaktas (devotees) pray to Bhagawan (God) sincerely making all their actions as offering to God, they will certainly receive appropriate grace from the Divine. There are nine types of devotion. Shravanam (listening to the glory of the Lord), Keerthanam (singing), Vishnusmaranam (remembering), Padasevanam (adoration), Vandanam (saluting), Archanam (worshipping), Dasyam (obedient service), Sneham (friendship) and Atmanivedanam (self-surrender). In whichever way you offer worship, God responds in the same way. When you surrender all your actions, you will surely receive His Grace.

Your own actions are the cause of your happiness or sorrow.

The importance of the mind in the process of transformation should be properly understood, because it is the mind that is the cause of both bondage and liberation. Your own actions are the cause of your happiness or sorrow. Do not blame others for your condition. Every thought, every word and every action has its reflection, resound and reaction. It is a sign of weakness to blame others for your troubles. You have to bear the consequences of your own actions. If they are unbearable, pray to God for relief. God alone can give relief in such cases.

Thought for the Day

There is only one important thing that you have to take note of - give up the delusion that the Divine is in some remote place. Have the faith that you are God. When you have the faith that you are Divine, you will never go astray. You will pursue the right path. Believe that God is in every human being. Have the firm faith that Divinity is present in every human form. Perform right actions befitting the human form. Eschew selfishness, and the attachments and hatred arising from it. The way to get rid of selfishness is adoration of God.

All Service done without a heart filled with Love is Useless.

Service should not be done in a spirit of condescension or to achieve some selfish objective. Not recognising the sacredness and purifying power of service, people hesitate to embark on social service. It should not be imagined that one is promoting the well-being of the nation by one's service activities. One should realise that ultimately one is only bettering oneself by rendering service. Service should proceed from an awareness of what one owes to society. Gratitude demands that one should serve society which is the source of all benefits enjoyed by man. Men without gratitude are worse than wild animals. What is required for service is not money and materials; a loving heart is the first requisite. All service done without a heart filled with love is useless.

Thought for the Day

Caught in the coils of the creation, man is blind to the fact that he is part of the Divine Creator. Identifying himself with the physical sheath in which he is encased, he is blind to the unity of all beings in the One Universal Absolute. Man has written and studied countless texts on spiritual discipline and discovery, and confounded the confusion indulging in dialectical rivalries and argumentation. But, he who has put at least a page or two of these tomes into practise, is rendered silent and innocent of any desire for fame or victory. He is happy in the depths of his being. He ploughs the field of his heart, sows the seeds of love and reaps the harvest of fortitude and equanimity.

Thought for the Day

The cosmos is the creation of the Divine. It is surcharged with energy. This energy is not localised at a particular point in space or time. Though this energy is all-pervading, man is unable to recognise its divine nature. As he cannot recognise it, he presumes that it does not exist. Electrical energy flows continuously in the wires. But, its presence is recognized only when a bulb is fitted and switched on. Likewise, though God is omnipresent. His divine effulgence will shine only in those who adore Him with a pure heart.

Omkara

Little children are trained to walk, by means of a walker, which they hold and push along. The Pranava (the sound of "Om") is such a contraption, with the three wheels of 'A', 'U' and 'M'. Holding it, man can learn to use the two feet of Bhakti (Devotion) and Vairagya (Detachment). If he gives up his hold on the Omkara, he plumps down on the ground helplessly. If he walks on with the help of the Pranava Japa (repetition of "Om"), he can certainly realize the glory of the Brahman (God), which is the very substance of the Universe.

Thought for the day

One may have listened to a number of spiritual discourses, but one should not be content with mere listening only to forget them later. One must enquire as to how much one has been transformed by attending these discourses. One must try to put into practice at least one or two of the teachings, get rid of worldly attachments gradually and progress on the path towards the Divine. In due course, divinity will surely blossom in the heart. If, on the contrary, one goes on multiplying one's worldly concerns and desires, one will go down to the animal level. One must be content with what one has and put it to good use with faith in the Lord.

Thought for the Day

The mansion called life must be built on strong foundations, the pursuit of artha (wealth) and kama (fulfillment of desires) must be regulated by the yardstick of Dharma. Dharma fosters those who foster it. The strongest foundation is ever-present Faith in the Almighty. Some may ask, "If He is Almighty, why then is he not patent?" Well, He reveals Himself only to the person who has the yearning, not the one who puts questions out of impudence or ignorance. He will be patent only in the pure heart that is not clouded by egoism or attachment to worldly objects.

Men have to do their duties; success or failure is determined by the Divine

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna calls upon Arjuna to regard himself as an instrument of the Divine. Every human being is indeed an instrument of God. As such, he should carry out his duties, leaving the results to God. Men have to do their duties; success or failure is determined by the Divine. Do not esteem yourself as the doer. Develop the conviction that the Indwelling Spirit in you is directing you and enabling you to act.

Widen the circle of love

Love God and you see God in every creature. Another way is to start with those around you, and then widen the circle of love till it envelops all creation. Let the mind dwell ever on God; let it see everything as Divine. That is what is described as one-pointedness. When the mind is so fixed, it will give up its tendency to search for faults and foibles in others; it will not run after the foul and the frivolous and it will not accumulate the trivial and the transient. The body is like the container of the torch, the senses, the bulb and the mind is the battery. But if you use your intellect as the switch, then, the mind will not be turned towards the undesirable. It will be used only to help the individual's progress towards his/her Divine destiny.

Women of India

At this critical hour in the history of the world, when the demoniac forces of fear and anxiety, injustice and inequity are raging in wild fury, it is the duty of every human being to be equipped with spiritual strength so that he may not be overwhelmed by the storm. This is an urgent and essential task and I must say that the women of India have a contribution to render service and a role to play. They must bring God into the hearts of the child and help it to keep Him there. For, Faith in God is the tonic that men needs to get back health and happiness.

Thought for the Day

It is only by the cultivation of detachment, by denying the senses the thrills they thirst for, and by diving into the depths of one's being with the firm belief that there is an immense inner realm that rewards exploration, that one can capture the bliss of the supreme tranquility. This is the highest morality, for, when this is done, man is saturated with love and has no trace of malice, hate, greed or lust left in him. Man's vision is purified by the ideal of the unity of all in One and the proliferation of One as all. Bagavan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought For the Day

To attain the attitude of surrender, of dedication, you must have Faith in God. This world is His play; it is not an empty dream; it has its own purpose and use. It is the means by which one can discover God; see Him in the beauty, the grandeur, the order, the majesty of Nature. These are but shadows of His Glory and His Splendour. Upasana (adoration of God), leads to the knowledge that He is all; when you experience that there is no Second, that is Jnana (Spiritual Wisdom)!

Develop the power of Self Confidence

Pleasure and sorrow are not inherent in the nature of man. They are products of the mind. Bliss is the true nature of man. But it can be realised only when the love of God is experienced. The sense of 'my-ness' has to be totally eradicated. The man who is filled with love has great peace of mind, purity of heart and is unruffled by any adverse circumstances, failures or losses. This fortitude is derived from love of the Lord, which endows him with self-confidence. Self-confidence generates an immense internal power. Everyone has to develop this power. Everyone has to develop this self-confidence so that the Atma-Ananda (bliss of the Self) may be experienced.

Thought for the Day

The Lord creates hostile forces to demonstrate the power of faith in the Divine and to confer peace and plenty on the believers. Just as a mother provides toys and sweets to a child for its pleasure, though they are of no use to her, God creates certain situations for the sake of the devotee, to bring out the depth of his devotion. Even in small matters, we find that their true nature is discovered only by experiencing the elements opposed to them. For instance, if one wants to develop physical strength, he has to subject the body to strenuous exercises. Even a diamond requires to be cut and polished to enhance its brilliance and value.

Thought for the day

Man's mind is too full of the world and desires demand too much of his time and energy. Engrossed in the analysis of the material world, he has lost all sense of sweetness and sublimity and truth has become just another word in the dictionary. Humility, patience and reverence have become irrelevant .The only ray of hope in this enveloping gloom of fear, hatred and persecution, is the Peace that one can win through self-control and Sadhana (spiritual endeavour). That Peace will pervade and purify the inner consciousness as well as the outer atmosphere.

Thought for the Day

All the myriad differences that one sees in the world are only varying manifestations of the one basic entity - Brahman (Godhead). A man who seeks to enjoy the fruit of a tree cannot be content with nourishing only the flowers. He has also to nourish the roots, the trunk, the branches, the leaves and the flowers. Likewise, the man who seeks the highest Jnana (wisdom) has to nourish the body, the senses and the feelings appropriately. God is the eternal Reality, without birth, growth or death, without a beginning or an end, and who is immutable. It is only bodies that are subject to change. The immutable Divine has to be experienced by making use of the body that is mutable........Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

The awareness of Swaswaroopa (one's real nature) is true knowledge and devotion is the means to achieve this knowledge. The light of the sun is reflected by the moon. While the light from the sun is warm and bright, when the same light is radiated by the moon, it is cool and soothing. The same light is present in the sun and the moon; the principle that illumines both the sun and the moon is the Spirit (Atma-tatwa). The sun's light has been compared to Jnana (wisdom) and the moon's light to Bhakti (devotion). Jnana is effulgent, while Bhakti is blissful. Thus Bhakti and Jnana are the means to the same end.

Who is a True Man ?

Every man aspires for happiness and wants to avoid sorrow. But in this world, truth and untruth, righteousness and unrighteousness, joy and sorrow pass and change with time. Man should have faith in the ultimate principle out of which both good and evil arise. True man is the one who treats pain and pleasure equally. You should trust the Divine and experience His love in your hearts. In this world, the gain from sorrow is more than that out of happiness. The saints and sages of yore, who have become immortal in history, aspired for hardships rather than happiness. The joy that arises out of overcoming hardships is more lasting than that gained from happiness. Hence, we should not be averse to sorrow nor should we look for happiness alone.

You can attain peace........

All cravings and impulses rise up with overpowering strength like waves from the sea, roar in fury, and then subside in to calm waters. They do not confer peace. Wisdom lies in forgetting these waves and directing one's attention to the calm depths within. You can attain Shanti (peace) only if you dive in to the deep and undisturbed depths of the sea within, not by swimming around on the surface.

To earn Shanti (peace), its inveterate foe, anger, must be laid low. Anger enslaves man and befogs his understanding. When you are full of Bhakti (devotion), understanding becomes easy. The form of Bhakti known as Shanta Bhakti is the best path leading to eternal, everlasting Ananda (bliss). Live a life of high ideals; be always happy and contented.

To win perfect happiness, one has to follow the path of Bhakti (devotion), dedicating oneself fully to the Lord. It cannot be got by any other means. The path of Jnana (wisdom) is possible for only one in a million. Under present conditions, Jnana-marga (path of wisdom) is indeed very difficult. The Karma-marga (path of action) and Yoga-marga (path of mind control) are also full of obstacles. Therefore, Bhakti-marga (path of devotion) is the smoothest, the most conducive to success and yields infinite bliss.

Duty of Man is to make proper use of the senses-Learn more from Ramayan

Ravana was in no way inferior to Rama in terms of knowledge but sage Valmiki, the composer of Ramayana, described Ravana as a fool and extolled Rama as one of wisdom. The reason was that Rama put His knowledge into practice and led an exemplary life. On the other hand, Ravana did not practice the knowledge he acquired, became a slave to his senses and thus ruined himself, his kingdom, and his entire clan. Education is meant not to satisfy the senses but to make one transcend the senses and set an ideal to society. Human body is bound by senses, which are responsible for both good and evil. Hence, it is the foremost duty of man to make proper use of the senses.

Affection, attachment, desire are natural to man and direct these qualities towards God

Service to God has been described as Bhakti (devotion). The heart of the devotee overflows with love for the Lord through constant remembrance and recitation of His name. Out of this stream of love, devotion emerges. One who is nourished by the nectar of Bhakti will not desire anything. To be unaffected by joy or sorrow, gain or loss, praise or blame, to remain steadfast and unwavering in faith is the hallmark of true devotion. Affection, attachment, desire are natural to man. However, when these qualities are directed towards God and when one is continuously engaged in good deeds, these qualities acquire purity and sacredness. Then one becomes not just a great soul but God Himself.

God is the basis of everything. He is omnipotent, omniscient and pervades all creation. Who can say that only this is Brahman (God) and that is not. The only eternal, existent entity is Brahman. The rest is all evanescent. Just as without cotton, there can be no cloth, similarly, there can be no world without God. Do not mistake this Deha (physical body) as real. It is the Dehi (indwelling Divinity) that is the true reality. This Divinity is beyond birth and death, the one without any beginning or end, and is the eternal witness. Recognise this truth.

Change your vision from outward to inward

The true dwelling place of God is the heart of man. You don’t need to go in search of God. Not being able to recognize your innate divinity is Ajnana (ignorance). You have to enquire into the reason for this ignorance. This is mainly because you follow the Pravritthi Marga (outward path) all your life under the influence of the sense organs, which are drawn towards external objects. You are not making any effort to follow the Nivritthi Marga (inward path). Thus, you are fully engrossed in the outward activities and are completely neglecting the inward path. You see everything from a worldly point of view and do not recognize the Divinity that pervades it. You have to make an effort to change your vision from outward to inward to perceive this Divinity.

Prema (Love) is beyound thought, word and deed

Sathya or Truth is realized by the Sadhana (spiritual discipline) of the tongue. Dharma (righteous living) is realized by the Sadhana of the individual through right conduct in relation to the society. Man can attain Shanti (peace and equanimity) by discipline of the mind. Prema (love) is beyond thought, word and deed. To consider it as a manner of speech, an attitude of mind or as physical trait is to demean it. Love is God. God is Love. The Divine Love is not easily comprehensible. Love has no trace of selfishness; it is not led by ulterior motives.

Thought for the Day

We are unable to comprehend the Atma (spirit) directly. We believe in the existence of the Atma on the strength of the statements made by the great sages who have had the experience of it and who have conveyed it through their teachings. When the Divine is described as One without attributes, eternal, pure, free and self-effulgent, this description will not make the Brahman (God) visible to us. It is only when the state of Brahman is realised by us that its existence is validated to us.

Every person is likely to commit mistakes without being aware of it. However bright the fire, black smoke is bound to emanate from it. What is the reason for the misery of people all over the world? They have forgotten the Divine basis of creation. They have ignored the One Absolute Principle underlying the whole creation. All lives lived without faith and devotion to the One Supreme Lord are useless. Lives spent without tasting the nectar of the Divine Principle are wasted opportunities. The Lord has given man the instruments for developing the intellect and discrimination. How to get Steady Mind?

God is immanent in the five elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Ether. Since there is no place in creation where the five elements do not exist, it can be concluded that God is all-pervasive. And yet, why is man unable to experience this divinity? Though water reflects objects, the image, unlike the object, is not steady. Similarly, man cannot be a perfect image of God if he has a wavering mind. Such a mind leads to confusion and depression, and with such a mind, a seeker can never realise the divinity within. What is essential for a steady mind is the control of the five senses and a ceiling on desires.

Don't Wait for any auspicious time

Among the festivals, Shivaratri is of exceptional importance. On Shivaratri night, divine vibrations are close to every human heart. At such a time, when people are engaged in holy tasks, they absorb the divine vibrations. The holy night of Shivaratri is intended to serve as a sacred occasion for turning the mind firmly towards God. As this night precedes the new moon day, it will be pitch dark everywhere outside while the heart will be filled with divine effulgence. Light represents auspiciousness. That is why this day is observed as Shivaratri.

The Jivi (individual) must realise the evanescence of the body and be all eager to merge in Shiva (God). For this, on need not wait for any auspicious time. This very moment is the right moment. Start today the Sadhana (spiritual exercise) that has to be done tomorrow. Start now the Sadhana that has to be done today. One does not know what is in store next moment. Therefore, there should be no delay in engaging oneself in the Sadhana that has to be done.

Lord Krishna has said in the Bhagavad Gita, "Mamaivamsho Jeevaloke Jeevabhuta Sanathanah" (all beings are an eternal part of My Self). God is present in the heart of one and all. It is because of Bhrama (delusion) that man is unable to realise his Divine nature. In the first instance, man should make efforts to overcome this delusion and realise that God is always with him, in him, around him, above him and below him. There cannot be any defects or imperfections in such a Divine principle. Whatever defects you think you see are purely the result of your imagination.

Offer worship to your mother

Mathru Devo Bhava, Pithru Devo Bhava (Revere your mother and father as God). You must understand that parents are verily God. If you make your parents happy, the whole world will be happy. It is meaningless to worship God without revering one's own parents. First of all, offer worship to your mother as she is the one who has given you birth. It is because of the nobility of the mother that the children attain good fortune. The parents have given you their blood, their wealth and have brought you up with great love and care, sparing no pains. So, you must love your parents and be grateful to them. That is true Bhakti (devotion). There is no greater Bhakti than this.

The Richest Man and the Poorest Man in the World

If you earn the wealth of pure love, you become the richest person in the world. He who is contented is the richest man in the world and the one who has many desires is the poorest man in the world. Today, man is filled with desires from top to toe. As long as one has desires, one can never be happy and peaceful. Give up desires and see for yourself how much love and bliss you get. The bliss you experience will be far superior to all the happiness you have experienced before. All the bliss is within you. But you are imagining that it is outside. What is outside is only the reflection, reaction and resound of what is within you.

The enemies of Man

Sadhana (spiritual practice) must be done with complete faith and without any room for doubt. Cultivate love for God. There is nothing greater than that. As your love grows stronger, the Spirit in you will shine brighter. Spiritual growth calls for restraint on desires. In addition, you also have to get rid of attachments and aversions. The three great enemies of man are Kama (desire), Krodha (anger) and Lobha (greed). Desire destroys devotion, anger annihilates wisdom, and greed poisons every action. These three vices are deleterious to Sath-Karma (good deeds), Upasana (devotion) and Jnana (spiritual wisdom). The only way to get rid of them is to burn them in Prema-Agni (the fire of Divine Love).
