In the past, Divine incarnations rid the world of evil by destroying the few fanatics and ogres who wrought it. But in the present times, fanaticism and felony reigns in every heart. The evil people are legion, no one is free from that taint, and all are wicked to some extent or the other. Therefore, everyone needs correction. Everyone must be educated and guided in the right path. Every being is a pilgrim destined to return to God and merge in Him. But most people have forgotten the path, they wander like lost children, wasting precious time in the by-lanes of the world. Human beings are the best amongst creation who can feel, think and experience their own journey across time! Armed with the sword of discrimination (Viveka) and the shield of renunciation (Vairagya), you must use this precious opportunity to transform yourself to become Divine - that is your destiny, the plan and purpose of your being.

To reform one’s tendencies and character is indeed an uphill task. One may have studied all the text-books of spiritual practice, also read all the scriptures, and may even have lectured for hours on them; but one slips into error when confronted by temptation. Like the land that is parched, the heart may appear to be free from any crop of evil, but when the first showers fall, the seeds and roots underneath the soil change the parched land into a carpet of green. You may have the best of vegetables, you may have the most capable chef in the world, but if the copper vessel in which you prepare the soup is not tinned, the dish you cook will be highly poisonous. Similarly, you must ‘tin’ your heart with truth, right conduct, peace and divine love. Only then will it become a vessel fit to repeat holy names, practice meditation, observe religious vows, do ritualistic worship, and so on.

An old year is gone by and a new year has come, and people joyfully celebrate the arrival of the new year. Do you know how many centuries have elapsed since the history of mankind? There is no use turning back and watching the road traversed – your duty is to watch the road ahead and march steadily towards your goal. It is lack of faith that causes you to lose temper and fly into fits of anger; it is lack of faith in yourself and in others. If you see yourself as truly the undefeatable Divine Self and everyone around you as your reflections, just as the scriptures declare them to be, you will never be provoked to get angry. What you must resolve today in the auspicious New Year is to march steadily on the spiritual path to manifest your Divinity. Resolve to do this one thing – Practice first, and then preach!

The contact of the senses with object arouses desire and attachment; this leads to effort and consequently, either elation or despair! Then, there is the fear of loss or grief at failure and the train of reactions elongates. The ‘see-er’ must not attach oneself to the ‘seen’; that is the secret to living happily. With many doors and windows kept open to all the winds that blow, how can the flame of the lamp within survive? The lamp is your mind, which must burn steadily unaffected by the demands of the world outside. Complete surrender to the Lord (Saranagathi) is one way of closing the windows and doors. For, when you surrender completely to the Lord, you are bereft of ‘ego’ and so, you are not buffeted by joy or grief. Saranagathi, will enable you to draw upon the Lord’s Grace for meeting all the crises that arise in your life and renders you heroic, steadfast and better prepared to face life’s challenges.

The growing crop in the fields thirsts for rain. It sees the heavy rain clouds sail across the sky, but it cannot rise up to that altitude, nor can it bring the clouds down to the ground. Humanity too sizzles in the hot sun, the unbearable heat of ego and greed. It needs the rain of grace; it knows only then it can flourish in peace and joy. Just as the clouds form droplets and fall upon the fields that they choose to foster, the Formless Absolute individualises Itself, assumes form, and comes down in the midst of humanity to save and sustain. That is the secret of God (Madhava) coming down as man (manava). Once the rains come, the sun has its uses! So too, when the grace of the Lord is gained, ego and greed can be put to profit by being made to flow into useful channels.

You may doubt whether such a small word like Rama, Sai or Krishna can take you across the boundless sea of worldly life. People cross vast oceans on a tiny raft; they are able to walk through dark jungles with a tiny lamp in their hands. The Name, even the Pranava (Om) which is smaller, has vast potentialities. The raft need not be as big as the sea. The recitation of the Divine Name is like the operation of a bore well to tap underground water; it is like the chisel-stroke that will release the image of God imprisoned in the marble. Break the encasement and the Lord will appear; cleave the pillar, as Prahlada (Lord Vishnu's devotee) asked his father to do, and the Lord who is ever there will manifest Himself. Churn and you bring the butter, latent in the milk, into view.

Practice—that is the real thing that matters in spirituality! Scholarship is a burden, it is very often a handicap. So long as God is believed to be far away in temples and holy places, you will feel religion to be a burden and a hurdle. But plant him in your heart and you will feel light, burdenless and in fact, stronger! It is like the food basket – when you carry it on the shoulder, it feels heavy and you feel you are too weak to even carry it during a walk. But sit near a stream and eat it. Though the total weight has not decreased, the consequence of eating the food makes you feel lighter and in fact stronger! Similarly, apply this to the idea of God. Do not carry it on your shoulder, take ‘Him’ in! Let Him blossom within you! Keep the memory of the Lord and His Glory always with you!

Do not engage yourself in the cultivation of or the promotion of wants and desires. That is a never ending process of sowing and reaping; you will never reach contentment and one desire when satisfied, will fan the thirst for ten more. Do not run after devious desires or crooked satisfactions. All roads leading to the realm of the senses are tortuous and blind, only the road that leads to the path of the Lord is straight. Cultivate righteousness in every action, that will reveal the Divine Self. Straightforwardness will enable you to overcome the three gunas (qualities). No single Guna should dominate; all must be tamed to fill the lake of bliss. It is your internal bliss that matters, not the external, the sensory, the objective and the worldly. If the inner poise or inner equilibrium is undisturbed by external ups and downs, that is a sure sign of spiritual success.

Do not tell me that you are completely satisfied with the delusion of worldly pleasures and do not care about bliss and peace! Trust Me, your basic nature abhors this dull, dreary routine of eating, drinking and sleeping, and is seeking earnestly something which it knows it has lost, which is contentment (Shanthi). In their heart of hearts, everyone craves for liberation from bondage to the trivial and temporary, and this is available at only one shop - the contemplation of the Highest Self, which is the source of all that is seen! However high a bird may soar, sooner or later, it seeks to perch on a tree top, to enjoy the quietness. So too, a day will come, when even the most haughty, the most willful, the most unbelieving and even those who assert that there is no joy or peace in contemplation of the Lord, will have to pray, “Oh Lord, grant me peace, grant me consolation, strength and joy!”

Intellect revels in discussion and disputation. Once you yield to the temptation of dialectics, it will take a very long time for you to escape from its shackles and enjoy the bliss. Hence be aware of the limitation of reason. Logic must give way to love and devotion. Intellect can help you for a little distance along the Godward path, the rest is inspired and illuminated by intuition. And often, egoism tends to encourage and justify the wildness, for a person is led along the wrong path by their very reason, if that is the path they like! You very often come to the conclusion you want to reach! Reason can be tamed only by discipline, by systematic application of the yoke of compassion, calmness, forbearance and endurance (Dhaya, Shantham, Kshama, Sahana). Train it to quietly walk along small stretches of road and after you are confident of its docility, you can take it along the tortuous road of six-fold temptations – lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and jealousy.

Like a brass vessel that must be scrubbed with tamarind, washed and dried to shine like new, your mind also must be treated with goodness and service, repetition of the Lord’s name, execution of beneficial deeds, and contemplation of the well-being of all. The Sun is up here in the sky, every day. It is the passing clouds that sometimes hide it from your vision. Similarly, the sensory world is the cloud that hides the Divine Soul (Atma) who is ever shining in the firmament of your heart. The same mind that gathers the clouds can also disperse them in an instance! For, it is the wind that collects them from all the quarters and renders the sky dark. And in the next moment, they change the direction and send them in a scurry to wherever they came from! So too, your mind is all powerful. Train it to disperse the clouds of illusion, not gather them.

God is not attracted by learning or scholarship, which does not lead anywhere except towards egoism and pride. God is drawn only by pure devotion. Bring to Me, whatever troubles you have, I shall take them on and give you bliss! You rush to the temple or Prasanthi Nilayam and crave to get a darshan! What greater sign of devotion is needed than this yearning? But, this love is not enough! In fact, it does not mean much at all! What is needed is the regulation of that Love, in the form of virtue and service. If you succeed in that, you truly achieve something. Renunciation and divine love should reverberate the atmosphere, and silence as the discipline should fill the place. Have the Name of the Lord on your tongue and the form of your chosen Lord before your eye. If you shape yourself this way, the place where you stand will become Kashi and your home will become Badri.

Man is saved by Vedanta, which is like the roar of the lion; it gives courage and enterprise; it makes one a hero. It does not whine or howl or cry. It instils the highest types of self-confidence. It is the strongest armour against the arrows of fate, a waterproof against the hailstorms of sensual pleasure. It is a curtain keeping out the mosquitoes of worry, which would otherwise rob you of sleep. With a Vedanta-saturated heart, you are a rock on the shore, unaffected by the waves of temptation. Vedanta challenges your spirit of adventure, your own reality. Board the train of spiritual discipline now and you will reach the terminus which is jnana (absolute knowledge of you and of all this). In a train journey you do not get down in the middle when some station attracts you. So too, in the spiritual journey the stations are karma (action), upasana (contemplation), and so on. You have to pass through them, but remember they are not the terminus. The terminus is Realisation.

Many discourage you from taking up spiritual practices and say that these can be taken up at a ripe old age, as if they are the prerogatives of, or special punishments for the aged! Enjoy the world while you can and then figure out the next - that seems to be the attitude of many! The child takes its first few steps in the safety of its home; it toddles about inside, until its steps become firm, until its balance is perfected, and then as it grows up steadily, it slowly ventures into the streets and the whole wide world. So too, every being must master the inner world first and become impervious to temptations. You should learn not to fall when the senses trip your steps; you should learn the balance of mind, which will not make you lean more to one side than to the other. After mastering this discriminatory wisdom, you can confidently move out into the outer world, without fear of accidents to your personality.

Your child will give you great joy through its play and prattle, but when it interferes with your work or demands your attention when you are working on something important, you get very angry with it. Your child now becomes your source of joy as well as grief! Remember, there is nothing in the world which can give you unmixed joy. Even if there is one such thing, when it is lost, you will become very sad! This is in the very nature of this world. So try to correct the very source of joy and sorrow, the mind. Control your mind and train it to accept and see the real nature of this objective world, which attracts and repels you in turns. This is the real fruit of education!

You know only the present, what is happening before your eyes; you do not know that the present is related to the past and is preparing the course of the future. Each birth wipes out the memory of the one already experienced. People do not realise that the end of this cycle of birth and death is in their own hands. The tree came from the seed and the seed from the tree and so on, since the beginning of time. You may not know which came first – tree or seed, but you should know that you can easily put an end to the cycle by frying the seed. A fried seed will not sprout again! You claim to have mastered your senses and all low desires, but they sprout at the very first opportunity, just like grass that grows after the first summer shower. Just as you seek the udder of the cow for the milk it gives, seek only the Lord and His Glory in Nature. As a matter of fact, Nature is useful only when it adds to the wonder and awe that it is able to provoke and sustain.

Life is a pilgrimage to God; the holy spot is there, afar. The road lies right before you; but unless you take the first step forward and follow that step with others, how can you reach it? Start with courage, faith, joy and steadiness. You are bound to succeed. Your mind and intellect are two bullocks tied to the cart of your ‘inner self’. The bullocks are not used to the path of Truth, Righteousness, Non-violence, Peace and Love, and so they drag the cart to the road that is very familiar to them, namely falsehood, injustice, worry and hatred. As its master, you must train them to take the better road, so that they may not bring disaster to themselves, the cart they are yoked to and to the passengers in the cart.

Remember, like underground water, the Divine is there in everyone. The Lord is the Indweller in all beings; He is All-pervading. He is the Soul (Atma) of every being. He is in you as much as in everyone else. He is not more in a rich person or bigger in a fat being; His spark illumines the cave of the heart of every one. The sun shines equally on all; His Grace is falling evenly on all. It is only you that erect obstacles that prevent the rays of His Grace from warming you. Do not blame the Lord for your ignorance or foolishness or perversity. Just as underground water wells up in a gushy spring when a bore is sunk down to that depth, by constant chanting of the Divine Name, touch the spring of Divinity, so that one day it gushes out plentifully, granting you coolness and unending joy.

Each and every one of you has a great deal of concentration. You know the art, for every task requires it and everyone benefits from good concentration. The carpenter, the weaver, the clerk, the boatman - all have it in a greater or lesser degree. Use that power of concentration for the task of directing the mind, towards its own goodness. Examine its working and train it to restrict itself to good company, good thoughts and good deeds. Practice meditation on any form of the Lord and repeat any name of the Lord with the awareness of its sweetness. That will teach your mind to be sharp and produce good music out of the joys as well as the griefs that are incidental to life. If the arena of life is entered just for getting sensory joy, you are in for all kinds of trouble. It is like sailing in a tiny boat on a storm-tossed sea without a rudder. So enter upon the path of spiritual discipline now itself.

Pleased with her endeavor herself, she sat down in great relief and said to herself, “Now no one will ask me to repay!” To her utter dismay, right beneath where she sat, from the ground underneath, she heard a voice, “Mother Earth is right underneath your feet, right here. You cannot escape me, however far you run!” So too, you cannot run away from Me. All I demand is good conduct, good habits, good thoughts and good company, wherever you are. Use this precious opportunity to strive earnestly, more than ever before, to reach your goal.

The mind is the wind that brings to us the smell – foul or fragrant from the world. When the mind turns towards foul, it makes you disgusted. When it turns towards the fragrant, you become happy. The wind gathers the cloud from four quarters; similarly your mind brings into your consciousness many disappointments. It is also the same mind of yours, which scatters away the clouds that darken it or make it feel lost in the night of doubt. Control the mind and you will remain unruffled at all times. This is the secret to undisturbed peace – Shanti, and this is the education that all of you must first secure firmly. To gain this equanimity, you do not need high degrees, but systematic spiritual effort (Sadhana). Then you will be always happy, whether you are poor or rich, appreciated or criticised, prosperous or unlucky. That is an armour without which it is foolish to enter the arena of life.

I have come to reform you. I will not leave you until I do that. Even if you get away before I do that, do not think you can escape Me, I will hold on to you. I am not worried if you leave Sai, for I am not anxious that there should be a huge gathering here and a big following around Me. Who invited all of you here? Without any printed invitation, thousands are coming to Sai. But, of one thing, be assured. Whether you come to Me or not, you are all Mine. This Sai Mata (Mother of all) has the love of a thousand mothers towards Her children; that is why I do so much lalana (fondling) and so much palana (protecting). If I appear to be angry, remember, it is only love in another form that I use to evince my disappointment when you do not shape up in line with my guidance.

Giving up the little ‘I’ is the true meaning of renunciation (Tyaga). Tyaga does not mean running away from the hearth and home into the jungle. It means sublimating every thought, word and deed as an offering to God and saturating all acts with Divine intent. This is the best spiritual practice to cultivate selfless love. Love gives for ever, it never asks another to give. Shower it, and you will be showered in return. Selfless love thrives on renunciation, they are inseparable. The essential reality of a human being rejects the ego as a blemish. When you sincerely investigate into the question, “Who am I”, you will find that everyone is included in ‘I’, and your love will expand limitlessly. Ego should not be allowed to express itself freely, as it smothers the spring of love. God is love, so all things created by God are filled with love.

All of you have vast resources of powers. When you do not utilise them while discharging duties to yourself and to the society that sustains you, you are only becoming a target for ridicule. When you are on a railway station platform, waiting for the train that is due and you hear the announcement that it will arrive five hours later, how do you feel? Don’t you fling abusive words at the train? When the mere coaches receive from you such a treatment, how much worse treatment would you deserve if you do not fulfill your duty and your responsibilities to the society? Utilise your skills and learning as consistently and effectively as duty demands. Unless used, even a watch gets rusted, what can be said therefore of unused skill? The body has not been granted by God to be fed, well clothed and to be paraded around in pride. The body has to be exercised to keep it trim as a tool for serving others.

Develop deep faith in the eternally valid Truth - God!

Seeing a glass half filled with water, the optimist is glad that the glass is half-full, while the pessimist is sad that it is half-empty. Though both the statements are correct the optimist hopes to fill the other half too, while the pessimist gives up in despair. The optimist has faith, the pessimist has no faith to sustain him – this is the key difference. Faith is power. Develop faith by steady effort. You all have faith in tomorrow following today and hence you take up activities and projects, that extend beyond this day! People with no faith cannot plan, they court misery due to their lack of faith! Faith must lead to effort. Through knowledge, faith and effort, wisdom can be attained. Equipped with these, you can scale great heights and emerge victoriously. Do not cultivate too much faith in things that are merely material. Develop deep faith in the eternally valid Truth - God!

In every form of spiritual practice (Sadhana) love has the first place. Love is the supreme mark of humanness. Love is God. Live in Love. Start your day with love, fill your day with love, and end the day with love; this is the way to God. You must also engage yourselves in Service (Seva), eschewing every trace of conceit (Ahamkara). In rendering service, there should be recognition of God’s omnipresence in all human beings. Most people have not developed the spirit of sacrifice (Tyaga) or aversion to sensual pleasures (Bhoga). True service calls for a spirit of sacrifice. Sacrifice is the only means to achieve immortality. Whatever work you may do, whether you are sweeping the floor or cooking dinner, convert them into a spiritual exercise. Infuse your every action with love for God and dedicate it Unto Him.

Develop the quality of ‘Kshama’ (forbearance and forgiveness) and refrain from harshness in speech at all times. Sai is the best example of this. Many people have indulged in calumny and criticism, but I remain totally unaffected and adhere firmly to what I deem as good. You too must realize that if you give up forbearance and forgiveness, you will have no peace. I am always at peace, because, I am always patient. You must also remain likewise. Whatever anyone may do to you, do not bother about it. What is it that you lose on account of their behavior? You have no idea of your own strength or weaknesses. If you resort to retaliation, you will only worsen your own condition. So bravely face such attacks and do not allow yourself to get agitated over them. You must win others by your forbearance. Make forbearance your life-breath and your ideal.

இசையை ஏந்தி, மிதந்து வரும் காற்றலைகளில், இவரது நாதம் கட்டாயம் இழையோடும். ஒரு நாளில் 5 நிமிடமாவது, இவரது இசையை நாம் செவிமடுக்காமல் இருக்க முடியாது. இது இசை உலகின் வரலாறு; இயற்கையின் விதி. நம் வாழ்வின் ஆசைகள், நிராசைகள், வலிகள், ஏக்கங்கள், கொண்டாட்டங்கள், மகிழ்ச்சிகள் என அத்தனை அம்சங்களிலும் இவரது இசை, நமக்கு இதம் தரும் ஒத்தடம்.

ஏட்டுல எழுதவில்ல; எழுதி வைச்சுப் பழக்கமில்ல; இலக்கணம் படிக்கவில்ல. இந்ந நாடோடி பாட்டுக்கு தாய் தந்தை யாரோ ? என்பது போல இந்த இசை மகானின் இசை ஞானம், இயற்கையாகவே இவருக்குள்ளே ஊற்றெடுத்த பிரவாகம். இந்த பிரபஞ்சம் இயங்கும் வரை, இவரது இசை மனிதகுலத்தை தாலாட்டிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

நேற்று இல்லை, நாளை இல்லை; எப்பவுமே நான் ராஜா; கோட்டையில்லை, கொடியும் இல்லை; அப்பவும் நான் ராஜா- என்ற கவிஞர் வாலியின் வரிகள், இந்த இசை ராஜாவுக்கு மட்டுமே பொருந்தும். இசை ஞானி இளையராஜாவை தவிர, யாரையும் இப்படி தமிழ் உலகம் அறிமுகப்படுத்தாது.

தேனி மாவட்டம் பண்ணைப்புரத்தில், மிக ஏழ்மையான குடும்பத்தில், ராமசாமி- சின்னத்தாயம்மாள் தம்பதிக்கு 1943 ஜூன் 2ல் பிறந்தவர். வறுமை காரணமாக, வைகை அணை கட்டும் போது மண் சுமந்தவர். இசையே, ரத்தநாளங்களில் பரவிக்கிடந்ததால், வறுமையின் வலிகளை மறந்து, பதினான்கு வயது முதல் ஆர்மோனியம் சுமந்தார். சகோதரர்கள் பாவலர் வரதராஜன், கங்கை அமரனுடன் இணைந்து இந்தியா முழுவதும் கச்சேரி, நாடகங்கள் நடத்தினார். எப்படியாவது சென்னை சென்று, சாதிக்க வேண்டும் என அம்மாவிடம் ஆவலை வெளிப்படுத்த, அவரோ வீட்டில்இருந்த வானொலி பெட்டியை 400 ரூபாய்க்கு விற்று, வழியனுப்பி வைத்தார். அதுதான் இசைச்சகோதரர்களின் வாழ்வில் பெரும் மாற்றத்தை உருவாக்கியது. தமிழ் சினிமா உலகிற்கு புது இசை வடிவத்தை தந்தது.

இந்தி இசையமைப்பாளர் ஆர்.டி.பர்மனின் பாடல்கள், தமிழகத்தை ஆக்கிரமித்திருந்த நேரம். முதன்முதலில் 1976ல் அன்னக்கிளி படத்தில் இளையராஜா இசையமைப்பில், ஜானகி பாடி வெளியான மச்சானைப் பார்த்தீங்களா..., பாடல் பட்டி, தொட்டியெல்லாம் பட்டையைக் கிளப்பியது. நாட்டுப்புற இசைச்சுவையோடு இந்த பாட்டு, மக்களின் இசையாக மாறி, சாமானியனையும் சங்கீதத்தின் பக்கம் திருப்பியது. தொடர்ந்து 16 வயதினிலே உட்பட இவர் தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம், மலையாளம், இந்தியில் 950 படங்களில் 4500 பாடல்களுக்கு இசையமைத்து சாதனை புரிந்துள்ளார்.

லண்டன் பி.பி.சி., 155 நாடுகளில் கருத்துக்கணிப்பு நடத்தியதில், தளபதி படத்தில் இவரது இசையில் உருவான ராக்கம்மா கையத்தட்டு...,பாடல், உலகின் சிறந்த 10 பாடல்களில் ஒன்றாக தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டது. லண்டன் ராயல் பில்ஹார்மோனிக் ஆர்கெஸ்டிராவில் சிம்பொனிக்கு இசையமைத்த, ஆசிய கண்டத்தின் முதல் இசையமைப்பாளர் (1993) இவர். மேஸ்ட்ரோ என அழைக்கப்பட இதுவே காரணம். ஓடாத படங்கள் எல்லாம், இவரது இசைக்காகவே ஓடியது. ஹீரோக்களுக்காக படங்கள் வெள்ளி விழா கண்ட நேரத்தில், ஒரு இசை அமைப்பாளருக்காகவே திரைப்படங்கள், தியேட்டர்களை விட்டு அகல மறுத்தன என்றால் அதுவும் இளையராஜாவுக்காகத்தான். கதாநாயகனுக்கு மட்டுமே கட் அவுட் வைத்து கொண்டாடிய தமிழ் ரசிகர் உலகம், இவருக்கும் கட் அவுட் வைத்து அழகு பார்த்தது.

பூவே பூச்சூடவா படத்திற்காக, இவரது இசையமைப்பிற்கு ஒப்புதல் பெற, பிரபல மலையாள இயக்குனர் பாசில், ஓராண்டு காத்திருந்தார் என்பது இன்னும் திரையுலகம் மறக்காத விஷயம். சிறந்த இசையமைப்பாளருக்கான தேசிய விருதை, 4 முறை வென்றார். திரைப்பட இசை அல்லாத, பஞ்சமுகி கர்நாடக செவ்வியலிசை ராகத்தை உருவாக்கினார். மாணிக்கவாசகரின் திருவாசகத்தை, இசை வடிவில் வெளியிட்டார். நாதவெளியினிலே, பால்நிலாப்பாதை, எனக்கு எதுவோ உனக்கும் அதுவே உட்பட பல்வேறு புத்தகங்களை எழுதியவர். .

* பண்ணைப்புரம் ராசய்யா, மேஸ்ட்ரோ இளையராஜாவாக மாறியதை எப்படி பின்னோக்கி பார்க்கிறீர்கள்?

மேஸ்ட்ரோவாக இருந்தாலும், பண்ணைப்புரத்து சிறுவனாகத்தான் இப்போதும் என்னைப் பார்க்கிறேன்.

* உங்களையும் பிரமிக்க வைத்த இசையமைப்பாளர்...

கடவுள்தான். அவர் ஒரே தாளத்தில் சூரியன், சந்திரன், சுக்கிரன் என கோள்களை சுற்ற வைத்திருக்கிறார். ஒரு சுற்று சரிகமபதநி எனில், ஒவ்வொரு கிரகத்தையும், ஒவ்வொரு தாளத்தில் சீராக சுற்ற வைக்கிறார். படைப்புகளில் என்னைப்போல் நீ இல்லை; உன்னைப்போல் நானில்லை. கல்யாணி ராகம் மாதிரி, தோடி ராகம் இல்லை. தோடி மாதிரி, கல்யாணி இல்லை. ஆனால், ஒன்றுக்கொன்று தொடர்பு இருக்கிறது. அதனால், இறைவன்தான் எனக்குப் பிடித்த இசையமைப்பாளர்.

* திரைப்படத்தில் நடித்திருக்கலாம் என எண்ணியது உண்டா?

நான் இப்போதும் நடித்துக்கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறேன் என தெரியவில்லையா (!) உங்களுக்கு?

* உங்கள் இசையில் வார்த்தைகளுக்கும், இசைக்கும் சமவாய்ப்பு கொடுத்தீர்கள். இன்று கணினி இசைக்கருவிகளின் ஆக்கிரமிப்புகளால், வார்த்தைகள் சிதைக்கப்படுவது பற்றி...

யார் சிதைக்கிறார்களோ, யாருடைய இசையில் இது நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறதோ, அவர்கள் சொல்ல வேண்டிய பதிலை நான் எப்படி சொல்வது? ஒரு பாடல் வெற்றியடைந்த பின், இம்முறைதான் சரியானது என அவர்கள் கூறினால், என்ன செய்ய முடியும்?

* நீங்கள் இசையமைக்க, அதிக நேரம் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட படம், பாடல்?

ஒரு படத்தின் அனைத்து பாடல்களுக்கும், இசைக் குறிப்பு எழுதி முடிக்க எனக்கு 30 நிமிடம் ஆகும். அதை பதிவு (ரிக்கார்டிங்) செய்யும் முன், இசைக்குறிப்புகளை இசைக்கலைஞர்களுக்கு வினியோகிக்க, ஒத்திகை பார்க்க அதிக நேரம் ஆகும். அதிக நேரம் எடுத்துக்கொள்வதால், ஒரு பாடல் பிரபலமாகும் என கூறமுடியாது. குறைந்த நேரத்தில் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்ட பாடல், வெற்றி பெறாது என சொல்ல முடியாது. மலையாளத்தில் வெளியான குரு படத்தில், உயர்ந்த கருத்துக்கள் சொல்லப்படாவிட்டாலும்கூட, கதைக்காக அதில் 5 பாடல்களுக்கும், பின்னணி இசைக்கும் அதிகபட்சமாக 25 நாட்கள் எடுத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

* பாடல், இசையமைப்பாளர்களுக்காக படங்கள் ஓடின அன்று; இன்று அந்நிலை இல்லையே?

நல்ல இசை இருக்கும் படத்தைத்தான் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என முடிவு செய்துவிட்டால், இக்கேள்வி எழாது.

* தமிழ் சினிமாவில் முதன்முதலில் புன்னகை மன்னன், விக்ரம் படங்களில் கணினி இசையை துவக்கி வைத்தீர்கள். அதுவே இன்று ஆக்கிரமித்து உள்ளது. மண்ணின் மரபு சார்ந்த இசை பின்தள்ளப்பட்டு, மேற்கத்திய இசை ஆக்கிரமித்துள்ளதே...,?

கணினிமயமாக இருந்தால் என்ன, எதுவாக இருந்தால் என்ன? உள்ளுக்குள் இருக்கும் இசையை பாருங்கள். எங்கு சென்றாலும், எந்த உயரத்தில் இருந்தாலும், பறந்தாலும் நம் பாதம் தரையில் பட்டுத்தானே ஆகவேண்டும்.

* இளையராஜாவின் புது இசை வடிவம் எப்போது?

எந்த நிமிடத்தில், எப்போது எனது இசை புதிதாக இல்லையோ, அப்போது என்னிடம் கேளுங்கள்.

* இசைக்கும் கைகள், எழுதவும் துவங்கி விட்டதே? இது இசையமைப்பாளர்களால் இயலாத விஷயம். இந்த எழுத்து வல்லமை எப்படி வந்தது?

சினிமா பாடல்களில், ஓரிரு வார்த்தைகளை பல்லவியாக கொடுப்பது வழக்கம். இப்படி, என்னுடன் வேலை செய்த கவிஞர்களுக்கு, பல்லவிகளை கொடுத்திருக்கிறேன். இதயகோயில் படத்தில் இதயம் ஒரு கோயில்..., பாடலுக்கு மெட்டு ஒத்துவரவில்லை. நானே அந்த பாடலை எழுதினேன். அன்றிலிருந்து எழுத்தில் ஆர்வம் பிறந்தது. பன்னிரு திருமுறை, சங்க இலக்கியம், நாலாயிர திவ்ய பிரபந்தம் படித்துப் பார்த்தபின், அடடா..., என்னமாதிரியான இலக்கியங்கள் இருக்கின்றன என வியந்து கற்றேன்.

ஒரு பாடலை படிக்கும்போது உள்வாங்கும் தன்மை, அதன் ஆழம், விசாலம், எதுகை, மோனை, அழகுணர்ச்சியை இயல்பாக பார்க்கும் தன்மை வாய்த்தால் யாரும் பாடல் எழுதலாம். காட்டு மரம் புல்லாங்குழல் ஆகவில்லையா? குழலாக இருந்தால் அதில் இசை வரவேண்டும். எத்தனையோ பேர், தமிழறிந்து புல்லாங்குழல்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள். புல்லாங்குழலில் காற்றை ஊதும்போது, விரல்களை எந்த நேரத்தில் ஏற்றி இறக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை இயக்க ஒருவன் தேவை. அவன்தான் இறைவன். அவனது விரல்களின் ஏற்ற, இறக்கங்கள் என்னுள் பாடலாக, இசையாக, புத்தகமாக வெளிவருகிறது.

இவ்வாறு மனம் திறந்தார்.

இளையராஜா ஆர்க்கெஸ்ட்ரேஷன் மேதைமைக்குச் சான்றுகள். ..

இளையராஜாவின் படைப்பாற்றல் உச்சத்தில் இருந்த சமயத்தில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட படங்களில் நடிக்கும் பாக்கியம் மோகனுக்கு அதிகமாகவே கிடைத்தது. இன்றும் மோகன் ஹிட்ஸ் என்ற பெயரில் விற்கப்படும் சிடிக்களில் அவரது படத்தைவிடப் பெரிய அளவில் சிரித்துக்கொண்டிருப்பது இளையராஜாதான். தமிழ்த் திரை இசையின் வசந்த காலமான 80-களில் மோகனை நாயகனாக வைத்து ஆர். சுந்தர்ராஜன், கே. ரங்கராஜ் என்று பல இயக்குநர்கள் ‘இனிய கானங்கள் நிறைந்த படங்களாக எடுத்துத் தள்ளிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

அந்தப் பட்டியலில் இடம்பெறும் முக்கியமான இயக்குநர் மணிவண்ணன். ‘திரில்லர்’, குடும்பக் கதைகள், அரசியல் விமர்சனம் என்று பல்வேறு வகைப் படங்களை இயக்கிய மணிவண்ணன், இறுதிவரை இளையராஜாவின் மீது பெரும் மதிப்பும் அபிமானமும் கொண்டிருந்தார். 1983-ல் அவரது இயக்கத்தில் வெளியான ‘இளமைக் காலங்கள்’ படத்தின் பாடல்கள் மிகப் புகழ் பெற்றவை. கோவைத் தம்பியின் ‘மதர்லேண்ட் பிக்சர்’ஸின் இரண்டாவது தயாரிப்பு இப்படம்.

இப்படத்தில் எஸ்.பி.பி. ஜானகி பாடிய ‘இசை மேடையில் இன்ப வேளையில்’ பாடல் முகப்பு இசை தரும் சுகந்தம் செழுமையானது. வசந்தத்தை மீட்டும் பெண் குரல்களின் ஹம்மிங்குடன் பாடல் தொடங்கும். ஹம்மிங்கின் மேலடுக்கில் ஜானகியின் அதிரசக் குரல் சிணுங்கும். பள்ளத்தாக்கின் மீது படர்ந்திருக்கும் காற்றில், சிறகை அசைக்காமல் பறந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் பறவையைக் காட்சிப்படுத்தும் வயலின் இசைக் கோவையைத் தொடர்ந்து, ‘இசை மேடையில்…’ என்று பாடத் தொடங்குவார் ஜானகி.

பல்லவியின் சில நொடிகளில் எஸ்.பி.பி.யின் மெல்லிய ஹம்மிங் வந்துபோகும். இளமையின் உற்சாகத்தை உணர்த்தவோ என்னவோ குதிரைக் குளம்பொலியைப் போன்ற தாளக்கட்டை இப்பாடலுக்குத் தந்திருப்பார் இளையராஜா. நிரவல் இசை முழுவதும் வயலின்களின் ராஜாங்கம்தான். முகப்பு இசையில் பயன்படுத்தியதுபோலவே இரு வேறு அடுக்குகளில் ஜானகியின் ஹம்மிங்கையும், பெண் கோரஸ் குரல்களையும் ‘மிக்ஸிங்’ செய்திருப்பார் ராஜா.

மோகன் இளையராஜா கூட்டணியின் முக்கியக் கண்ணி எஸ்.பி.பி.யின் குரல். இந்தப் பாடலில் அதை உறுதியாக நிரூபித்திருப்பார் எஸ்.பி.பி. ‘முத்தம் தரும் ஈரம் பதிந்திருக்கும்’ எனும் வரியின் இறுதியில் சின்ன பிர்கா ஒன்றைத் தருவார். ‘கொன்னுட்டான்யா’ என்று தோன்றும். இரண்டாவது நிரவல் இசையில் ‘பாப்பபப பாப்பப’ எனும் ஹம்மிங்கை ஜானகி பாடுவார். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து வரும் ஹம்மிங் ஆண் தன்மையும், பெண்ணின் இனிமையும் கலந்த குரலாக ஒலிக்கும். அது ஜானகியின் ஹம்மிங்கா, எஸ்.பி.பி.யுடையதா என்று குழம்பாமல் அப்பாடலைக் கடந்துவர முடியாது. அந்த அளவுக்கு எதிர்பாராத சுவாரஸ்யங்களைத் தனது இசையில் இளையராஜா புகுத்திய காலம் அது.

இப்படத்தில் ஷைலஜா பாடும் ‘படிப்புல ஜீரோ நடிப்புல ஹீரோ’ பாடல், அக்கால ‘ஆடம் டீஸிங்’ பாடல்களில் ஒன்று என்றாலும், வேகமான அதன் தாளக்கட்டும் ஷைலஜாவின் கூர்மைக் குரலும் வித்தியாசமான அனுபவத்தைத் தரும்.

இப்படத்தில் சுசீலாவுடன் ஷைலஜா இணைந்து பாடும் ‘ராகவனே ரமணா ரகுநாதா’ பாடலில் பஜன் பாடல்களுக்குரிய பக்தி மணமும், காதல் ரசமும் ஒரு புள்ளியில் இணைவதை உணரலாம். நிதானமான தாளக்கட்டில் வீணை, புல்லாங்குழல் ஆகிய இசைக் கருவிகளுடன் தனது வயலின் ஆர்க்கெஸ்ட்ரேஷன் முத்திரையை இணைத்து இளையராஜா உருவாக்கிய பாடல் இது. இரண்டாவது நிரவல் இசையில் வயலின் இசைக் கோவையின் மேலடுக்கில் ஒலிக்கும் சுசீலாவின் ஆலாபனை, இப்பாடலின் உச்சபட்ச இனிமைத் தருணம்.

இப்படத்தில் ஜேசுதாஸ் பாடிய ‘ஈரமான ரோஜாவே’ பாடல் பெரும் வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றது. பேஸ் கிட்டாரின் அஸ்திவாரத்தில் எழுப்பப்பட்டிருக்கும் காதல் சோக கீதம் இது. தாளக்கட்டில் மிருதங்கத்தின் ஒரு துளி, முதல் நிரவல் இசையில் கனத்த நெஞ்சின் விம்மலைப் போன்ற வயலின் கீற்று, விரக்தியை வெளிப்படுத்தும் விசில் என்று இப்பாடலின் ஒவ்வொரு நொடியிலும் இசை நுணுக்கங்களைப் புதைத்திருப்பார் இளையராஜா. இரண்டாவது நிரவல் இசையில் பனியால் உருவான மேகத்தின் நகர்வைப் போன்ற வயலின் இசைக் கோவை, நம்மைத் தழுவியபடி நகர்ந்து செல்வதை உணர முடியும்.

இப்படத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான, அற்புதமான டூயட், ஜேசுதாஸ் சுசீலா பாடிய ‘பாட வந்ததோர் கானம்’ பாடல். சுசீலாவின் ‘லாலலா’வுடன் தொடங்கும் இப்பாடலிலும் தாளக்கட்டில் மிருதங்கத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தியிருப்பார் இளையராஜா. பல்வேறு இசைக் கருவிகளின் நடுவே பியானோவைப் பிரதானமாக ஒலிக்கச் செய்த அரிதான பாடல்களில் ஒன்று இது.

பல்லவியிலிருந்தே பியானோவின் உரையாடல் தொடங்கிவிடும். முதல் நிரவல் இசையில் விண்கல்லின் வீழ்ச்சியைப் போன்ற ஒற்றை வயலின் நீட்சி ஒலிக்கும். சரணத்தில், ‘கண்ணில் குளிர்காலம்… நெஞ்சில் வெயில் காலம்’ எனும் வரியின்போது அந்த இரண்டு பருவங்களையும் இசையாலேயே உணர்த்தியிருப்பார் இளையராஜா. பாந்தமான அமைதியுடன் ஜேசுதாஸும், காதலின் பரவசத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தும் குரலில் சுசீலாவும் அற்புதமாகப் பாடியிருப்பார்கள்.

இளையராஜா பாடல்களின் உடனடி வெற்றிக்கு, தனித்த சுவை கொண்ட மெட்டுக்கள் காரணம் என்றால் 30 ஆண்டுகள் தாண்டியும் அவை ரசிகர்களின் மனதில் வியாபித்திருப்பதற்குக் காரணம், வெவ்வேறு மனச் சித்திரங்களை எழுப்பும் அவரது ஆர்க்கெஸ்ட்ரேஷன்தான். இப்படத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற அத்தனைப் பாடல்களும் அவரது ஆர்க்கெஸ்ட்ரேஷன் மேதைமைக்குச் சான்றுகள். ...

Though the source of peace and bliss is within, people seek them in the external, like one pursuing a mirage. Owing to restless activity, endless worry and limitless desires, peace of mind is lost and it has become prey to discontent and misery. At the outset, peace has to be cultivated within ourselves. And then that peace has to be extended to the family. From the home it should be spread to our village. Thus, peace should begin with the individual and spread to the whole society. In the Sai organisation, efforts are made to propagate the values of Truth, Righteousness, Love, Peace and Nonviolence. This is only propagation, but not practice (or demonstration). Mere preaching is of no avail. Of all the virtues, love is the foremost. If love is fostered, all other qualities flow from it. Our degradation is the result of forgetting God. When we remember God, our life will be filled with peace and happiness.
