Thought for the Day

Your bank helps you to keep your money safe when you deposit it there. The bank will allow you to make use of it when you are in difficulty. But your money helps you only in worldly distress. You accumulate it with great care, by thousands of acts of denial, denying yourselves this comfort or that convenience, saving in this item and that, spending less and earning more; but a day comes when you have to leave the pile and go, empty handed. This passbook will not be looked into there. While you should develop the habit of saving in a bank for the sake of old age and a rainy day, it is necessary that you should develop the ‘saving habit’ for the hereafter too, so that you may be ‘saved’. Dharmam cara, satyam vada (Do righteous deeds, speak the truth) - that is the method. Righteousness, Truth and Love are the currency accepted by that other bank. All acts, words and feelings ringing with the purity of these metals will be accepted as deposits.

Raso vai sah - He is sweetness. So the Universe (jagat) which is His creation must be sweet for those who recognise it as His handiwork. The jagat must serve as a tool to learn the glory and power of God, so that you may seek Him and reach Him. Unless you have love, you cannot claim kinship with votaries of God; mere ritualistic worship, pompous adoration, or loud acclamation will not entitle you to enter the portals of the Divine! These are mere tin and trash before the treasure-chest of love. Pure Love is the bridge which helps passage from birth to death to deathlessness. When you rise from being human to being Divine, there is no more birth or death. Liberation happens when you love every being so intensely that you are aware of only One. Soak your heart in love, soak your acts in righteousness, and soak your emotions with compassion; then you will merge in God very quickly

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Prayer alone makes life happy, harmonious and worth living in this universe.

God is everywhere at all times; He accomplishes everything. He accomplishes the minor feat of assuming human form, and growing up with men and women and being in their midst to win them over to the path of truth. He gives humanity a chance to savour His sweetness and have a glimpse of His glory. He acts despite the absence of any compulsion, so that human beings may choose to act likewise! The Sage Vyasa happened to pass by when Krishna was washing the horses of Arjuna's chariot in the water of the Yamuna; he shed a tear, contemplating the duty that the Lord had imposed on Himself in order to guide man aright. Krishna played the role of servant to Arjuna, so that man may know how to serve and thereby rise to sovereignty!

The name ‘Krishna’ has three separate meanings: (1) Karsh is one root from which the name is derived. It means, ‘that which attracts’; Krishna attracts hearts to Himself, by His sportive pastimes, miraculous victories over the forces of evil, His charming conversation, His wisdom and His personal beauty. (2) The word is also related to the root Krish, to cultivate, as a field for growing crops. The meaning derived therefrom is - He who removes the weeds from the heart of man, and sows the seeds of faith, courage and joy. (3) It is related to the root, Krish, which also means something above and beyond the three attributes and the three eras, and na means, Sat-chit-ananda(Truth-Consciousness-Bliss). The leelas (divine plays) and mahimas(miracle powers) of Krishna through which He attracts the love of mankind, cultivates the harvest of joy in the hearts of His devotees and makes them aware of His being Sat-chit-ananda are described in the Bhagavata.

Never allow the pillars to slant or tumble, as many individuals, communities and nations are doing now!

Your determination to acquire ananda and shanti (bliss and peace) should not flicker like the flame of a lamp placed on a gusty windowsill. You must learn to acquire them from scriptures or from the wise who have won them. Then adhere to the path, however sharp the criticism, and no matter who condemns it callously and cynically. Cynical laughter shouldn’t harm an aspirant. Can a storm shake the Himalayan ranges? Let not your faith in your goal quake before troubles, trials, toils, travail, distress or despair. They are but passing clouds, casting temporary shadows, hiding the glory of the sun or the moon for a little while. Never get distracted by doubt or despondency. Build the mansion of your life on the firm pillars of dharma, artha, kama, moksha (righteousness, prosperity, desire and liberation) - the goals of human effort (Purusharthas) laid down by ancient sages, each pillar bound strong and safe with every other. Never allow the pillars to slant or tumble, as many individuals, communities and nations are doing now!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Take life in the world as a compulsory duty imposed on you.

When Pandavas were traversing the Himalayas, Dharmaraja was affected by mental anxieties and prayed to Krishna for help. Lord Krishna gave them solace and gave Dharmaraja a note, which he was to read to himself whenever he was affected by joy or grief. The note read: “This too shall pass” (Eppudu undadhu). This method will calm your mental agitations. Take life in the world as a compulsory duty imposed on you. You are now in jail under a sentence for crimes committed in a previous birth. The superintendent assigns various duties — cooking, drawing water, chopping wood, etc. Do work assigned to the best of your ability, without any expectation of reward. If you behave well, do assigned duties without demur and cause no trouble, then you may be released sooner, with a certificate that you are reliable and good. This analogy should help you practice selfless action without expecting reward (nishkama karma), and help you curb your senses.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

One’s claim to be a devotee of the Lord, a votary of the Highest, can be admitted only if your passions and emotions are pure, noble and your character virtuous.

The tongue may utter the Name of the Lord, your ears may be open when the glory of the Lord is recited, your hands may scatter flowers on the image of God, but does your tongue know or relish its taste? Does the ear yearn? Does the hand hanker for the Lord? The result of your spiritual practices can be experienced only when your heart is aware of the Supreme and when your mind is thrilled when the glory of God is recollected. Otherwise it is like the spoon which dips into sour and sweet with equal alacrity and insensitivity. It does not refuse or relish any taste! Read Vedanta or sacred texts or scriptures earnestly and practice them, then it will become part of your daily living, conduct and character. One’s claim to be a devotee of the Lord, a votary of the Highest, can be admitted only if your passions and emotions are pure, noble and your character virtuous.

Thought for the Day

The senses say, “Why struggle? Eat, drink and be merry while you can,” but the guru says, “Death lands on you without notice; overcome its fear now, before the call comes. ‘Now’ is the true friend, ‘yesterday’ has deceived you and gone, and ‘tomorrow’ is a doubtful visitor.” Once when his eldest brother, Dharmaraja, promised a mendicant yogi some help for a ritual sacrifice and asked him to call the next day, Bhima ordered all drums to beat and all flags to fly, for, “My brother is certain to live until tomorrow! At least, that is what he believes will happen.” Death stalks your footsteps like a tiger in the bush. So without further waste of time, try to give up sloth and anger; be tranquil amidst the storms and mix in tranquil company. Let the flagrant aroma of divine thoughts, full of love to all, rise around you. The flame of experiential knowledge of Supreme Reality can reduce to cinders the impulses inherited through many births and many experiences. In the heat of that crucible, dross is burnt and precious metal is isolated.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

To get angry is but the effort of a moment, but to get peace, become unaffected by the ups and downs of life, is the result of years of training in Vedanta. Peace can be established only with firm faith that all material things that fall within the range of sensuous experience are fundamentally non-existent. They are products of illusion, of the tendency to see many, where only One exists. You see corpses proceeding one after another to the graveyard, yet you move about unconcerned; you feel you are eternal. In fact, you, the Divine Self is indeed eternal! Just as water you drink is eliminated as perspiration, the karma you accumulate is eliminated throughkarma that is gladly borne. So, bear both ‘mirth and moan’ with equal calm. Like the space in the pot merging with the space outside the pot, silently, fully, with no trace of separation or distinctness, merge with the Universal. That is real surrender, salvation and liberation!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

People are not happy with what they have and feel unhappy over what they have not got.

What is sadhana (spiritual exercise)? Service is true sadhana. Serve society. Treat everyone as your brother and sister. Only through selfless service will your life be redeemed. Consider service unto others as a service to God. Unfortunately, today people take to service expecting something in return. People have become money-minded. Excessive wealth makes one egotistic. Ego leads to bad qualities. Excessive desires make one suffer. As the desires increase, misery also increases. “Asamtruptho dwijo nashtaha (a discontented man suffers both ways).” People are not happy with what they have and feel unhappy over what they have not got. Be content with what you have. Experience bliss and share it with others. If you have devotion, God Himself will confer bliss.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Start the day with love, fill the day with love, spend the day with love and end the day with love.

In this fleeting world, there are many mysterious powers unknown to man. These are referred to as transcendental and hidden powers; not all can understand them. Every being is endowed with divine power. That is why I always address you as Divyatma Swarupulara (Embodiments of Divine Atma). Even today, doctors are unable to comprehend the secrets and mysteries of the human body. For example, take the tongue. There are 40,000 taste buds on the tongue. Of these, there are 25,000 buds that generate heat in the tongue. The eye, which is hardly an inch in size, can recognise 13 crore types of light rays. There are millions and millions of cells in your body, and each cell is divine and contains your complete form. Is it not awe-inspiring? Whose creation is this? This is the transcendental power of Divinity. It is foolish to consider such all pervading Divinity to be non-existent!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

It is a great fortune to have been born in Bharat.

It is a great fortune to have been born in Bharat. To be able to declare that you are a Bharatiya is a matter of great luck. You must be worthy of this boon given to you. Under no circumstance should anyone criticise their Motherland. Under no circumstance must you criticise your Motherland. Even in your dreams you should not think of forgetting or disowning your Motherland. That is true gratitude. What is the use of taking birth as a human, if one lacks a sense of gratitude? The one without gratitude is a wicked person. In the hymns that pertain to the worship of the Sun God, it is said that the Sun God may forgive any sin but not ingratitude. Hence never fail to be grateful, and never give anyone the opportunity to accuse you of being ungrateful. You must endeavour to enhance the glory of Bharatiya culture. One’s mother and motherland are greater than the very heaven.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

The bad in you reflects as the bad in others.

Praise and censure are reflections of the inner being. A virtuous person never criticises others; only the mean indulge in such unsacred activities. The color you see depends on the color of glasses you wear. Wear the glasses of love, and you will see love all around. Do not attach importance to criticism. If someone criticizes you loudly, it goes into thin air. If they accuse you silently, it goes to themselves. Are they criticising your body? The body is inert. Are they criticising the Atma? If so, the same Atma dwells in both and hence amounts to criticising themselves! A true seeker of truth will realise this fact! Take time to recognise the hundred faults present within yourself. Instead, why do you seek to point out the most insignificant fault in others? The bad in you reflects as the bad in others. Choose to correct yourself first! Only then will your mind become pure. Thus always develop sacred thoughts!

When Lord Rama’s idol was taken away from Thyagaraja, he was grief-stricken. He even questioned the divinity of Rama and cried out, “Don’t you have the power to solve my problems, or do I lack devotion? Definitely I have devotion, it is only you who lack power.” He continued in this vein extolling his devotion and in the process, he became egoistic. When he sat in meditation, wisdom dawned on him. He realised his folly in doubting Rama’s divinity. He reflected, “Without the grace of Lord Rama, could a monkey cross the ocean? If Rama lacked power, would Lakshmana worship Him or for that matter Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, serve Him and the extremely intelligent Bharata offer his salutations? O Rama! Certainly Your power is immense. It is my ignorance and meanness that I challenged Your divinity.” He sought Lord Rama’s pardon and surrendered himself unto Him. When you purify your heart and surrender to God completely, God instantly manifests!

Make your hearts clean, pure and smooth.

A great painter once offered to do a fresco on the palace wall; with him came another, who declared that he would paint on the wall opposite whatever painting the great artist drew, even if curtains hid it from his view and the subject of the fresco was maintained a secret! Both were commissioned to the tasks they offered! The second painter finished his work at the very moment the first one completed! The prince arrived in the hall, where a thick curtain partitioned off the two artists. He admired the fresco very much and ordered the curtain to be removed, and lo, on the wall facing the fresco, there was an exact duplicate of that laborious picture! Exact - for the painter polished the wall, making it a fine big mirror! Make your hearts clean, pure and smooth, so that the glory of the Lord might be reflected therein and the Lord might see His own image thereon!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Happiness lies only in union with God.

There are many obstacles along the path of devotion. Difficulties are meant for cleansing the heart and rendering it clean and pure. Some people accuse, criticise and scorn or condemn God when they are going through difficulties. Each one has to face the consequences of their own actions. God remains unaffected. God is pure, unsullied and sacred. Let people say anything, be cool and calm. Do not enter into unnecessary arguments with anyone. Arguments breeds only enmity. Always speak softly and sweetly with a smiling face. That will silence the critics. Smile is the best answer to criticism. When Paul went on accusing Jesus, He lovingly went up to him and gave a pleasing smile. The sweetness in the nectarous smile of Jesus transformed the poisonous heart of Paul. Hence, be always cheerful, even in times of adversities. Always put up a smiling face, never walk around with a ‘castor-oil face’. Happiness lies only in union with God.

To conquer egoism, no rigorous exercise or breath control is necessary. Not even complicated scholarship. Gopikas confirmed this truth. They were simple rural folks, untouched by the conclusions of deep study. Narada was once so shocked at their ignorance of the science of spiritual progress that he volunteered to go and offer some lessons in Jnana(wisdom). On entry into Brindavan he found that the gopis selling milk or curds in the streets forgot to shout the names of the items they were selling and were calling out, "Govinda, Narayana"! They continuously pined and called out the names of the Lord. That is how immersed they were in God-consciousness. The dust of Brindavan was highly sacred for them. They had no wish for sensual pleasures (vishayavasana) and hence, they had no ignorance (ajnana). Narada realised that they needed no spiritual lessons! Instead, he prayed to them to teach him the means of getting that deep yearning for the Lord!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

When duties are discharged properly, rights will be secured of their own accord.

The temptation to ignore Dharma grows from egoism; the wish to satisfy a lower desire is the root-cause of Adharma(unrighteousness). This wish takes hold of you slyly and silently like a thief in the night, or like a comrade come to save you, or like a servant come to attend on you, or like a counsellor to warn you. Oh, wickedness has a thousand tricks to capture your heart. Be ever alert against this kind of temptation. The wish makes a chink in your consciousness, enters and establishes itself, multiplies and eats into the personality you built up with laborious care over years. It then captures the fort of your heart and you are no longer in control; you become a puppet manipulated by your own inner enemies. Whenever you try to rebuild yourself, they penetrate the structure and you will need to start again from ground zero! So be alert to resist the first temptation to ignore Dharma!

Many of you grieve: “It is said that getting the audience of a holy person is destruction of sin (darshanam papa nashanam). Well, I have had darshan not once but many times, and yet, my evil fate has not left me and I am suffering even more than before!” True, you may have come and had darshan, and sowed fresh seeds secured from the holy places — seeds of love, faith, devotion, good company, godly thoughts, remembering God’s name, etc. And you may have learnt the art of intensive cultivation and soil preparation. Now you have to carefully sow the seeds in well-prepared fields of cleansed hearts. Until the new harvest, when the fresh produce comes in, don’t you have to consume the grain already stored in previous harvests? The troubles and anxieties you experience now are the crop collected in your previous harvests, so do not grieve and lose heart!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Every single thing in Nature has its Dharma;

Every single thing in Nature has its Dharma; water has its Dharma, the nature and obligation to move; fire, the Dharma to burn and consume; the magnet, to attract and draw unto itself. And, every one of these is keeping up its Dharma unchanged, including the Solar system and the stars of the Universe. Amongst things endowed with Consciousness or Chaitanya, plants and trees, insects and birds, born out of eggs or the mammals – all have managed to treasure their Dharmaunaffected by the passage of time. But humanity, whose intelligence sweeps from the inert and the infinitesimal to the Super-conscious and the Universal, is the only living thing that has slipped, and is sliding down. Dharma prescribes ‘Satyam vada’ and ‘Dharmam chara’ – Speak the truth and practice righteousness. Examine every moment of your waking time whether you are observingDharma or straying away? Fill every moment with thoughts, words and deeds that reflect your understanding of Dharma.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Silence is the only language of the realised. Practice moderation in speech. That will help you in many ways. It will develop unconditional love (prema), for most misunderstandings and factions arise out of carelessly spoken words.

Silence is the only language of the realised. Practice moderation in speech. That will help you in many ways. It will develop unconditional love (prema), for most misunderstandings and factions arise out of carelessly spoken words. When the foot slips, the wound can be healed, but when the tongue slips, the wound it causes in the heart of another will fester for life. The tongue is liable to four big errors: uttering falsehood, scandalising, finding fault with others, and excessive articulation. These have to be avoided if there has to be peace (shanti) for the individual as well as for society. The bond of universal brotherhood will be tightened if people speak less and speak sweet. Hence, silence was prescribed as a vow for spiritual aspirants by the spiritual texts. You are all spiritual aspirants at various stages of the road, so this discipline is valuable for you also.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Ravana had vast knowledge of spiritual texts. His ten heads represent the learning he had earned from the sixShastras (scriptures) and the four Vedas. But he never put that knowledge to any use. He craved for the possession of Prakriti (material objects) alone; he wanted to master the world of matter, the objective world. But he was not tamed by the spirit. He discarded thePurusha, the Lord; he was content with the possession at Lanka, of Prakriti (Matter), represented by Mother Sita. That was why he fell. Like the monkey which could not pull its hand from out of the narrow-necked pot, because it first held in its grasp a handful of groundnuts which the pot contained, people too are suffering today, as they are unwilling to release their hold on the handful of pleasurable things they have grasped from the world. One is led into the wrong belief that the accumulation of material possessions will endow them with joy and calm. But Divine Love alone can give that everlasting joy.
