Instead of having tons of knowledge an ounce of practice is enough.

Once, a sculptor brought three dolls to the court of King Bhoja. All three looked alike and beautiful. The emperor summoned the prime minister and asked him to decide which of the three dolls was the best. The prime minister brought an iron wire and put it in the ear of one of the dolls. The wire came out from the other ear. He remarked, “This is the worst doll.” When he put the wire in the ear of the second doll, it came out of its mouth. He said, “This doll can be given the second prize.” When he put the wire in the ear of the third doll, it went inside and did not come out. The prime minister declared, “This deserves the first prize." What does this mean? It means that the person who assimilates what he hears is the best person. In this modern age, some people hear sacred teachings in one ear but immediately let them out of the other ear. Some others repeat like parrots what they read in the scriptures and what they hear from Swami. Only a few assimilate what they hear and put them into practice.

What is the most common tendency of the mind? How can we regulate it?

The mind is influenced by passion for objective pleasure and delusion of ignorance with which it pursues fleeting objects of the world with amazing quickness. So, again and again, it must be led towards higher ideals. Of course, it’s difficult at first, with persistent training, the mind can be tamed; it will get fixed in the perpetual enjoyment of “Om”. Mind can be trained by following methods of quiet persuasion, promise of attractive inducements, practice of withdrawing the senses from the outer world, endurance of pain and travail, cultivation of sincerity and constancy, and acquisition of mental equipoise (Sama, dama, uparati, titiksha, shraddha, and sama-dhana). Mind can be turned towards Brahman and constant contemplation of Brahman by the study of the Upanishads, adoption of regular prayer, serving others, the ecstasy of devotional singing, and adherence to truth. Very often, with the progress of meditation, new desires and resolutions arise in the mind. But one need not despair. The mind can be broken provided one takes up the task in right earnest and follows regular routine of training.

What is the true spirit of Islam?

All founders of religions heard the impersonal voice of God revealing Atma that activates the entire Creation. Just as Vedas were 'heard' and propagated as 'heard' (Sruti), Quran too was 'heard' by Hazrath Muhammad. The Quran has Salat and Zakat as two eyes. Salat means prayer; Zakat means charity. Those who consider charity as a high duty and elevate their consciousness through prayers and continuous meditation on God are Muslims.Islam is a word which denotes not a particular religion but a state of mind, a state of total surrender to the Will of God. Islam means dedication, surrender, peace, tranquillity. Islam denotes a community whose members achieved supreme peace through surrender to the All-Merciful, All-Powerful God and who vowed to live in peace with their fellowmen. Later, it came to be applied to communities that considered themselves separate and different from the rest.Islam taught something higher. It directed attention to The One in the many, Unity in Diversity and led people to God.

Why should we perform our spiritual practices consistently?

I am told that you are aspirants of spirituality (sadhakas), and so I shall speak to you about sadhana (spiritual practice). Well. What is sadhana fundamentally? It is 'upavasa', 'upasana’.Upa means near, Asana means sitting and Vasam means residing. We sit near a cooler so that we may feel cool. We sit near God, so that we might derive some Godly qualities and get rid of ungodly characteristics.God is not an external contrivance or convenience like the air cooler. He is the Antaryamin, the Inner Director, the Inner Reality, the Unseen Basis on which all this seeable world is built. He is like the fire-principle that is latent in wood, which can be made manifest, when one piece is rubbed vigorously against another.he heat that is produced consumes the wood in fire!Satsangh (Company of the good and the godly) makes you meet with other individuals of a like nature, and creates the contact that manifests the Inner Fire!

Service must emanate from a tender heart which responds to every sob and groan, and is ready to renounce and suffer gladly. - BABA

The age span, 16-30 years, is crude, for that is the period when life adds sweetness to itself, when talents, skills, and attitudes are accumulated, sublimated and sanctified. If the tonic of unselfish Seva (service) is administered to the mind during this period, life's mission is fulfilled - for the process of sublimation and sanctification will be hastened by this tonic.Do not serve for the sake of reward, attracting attention, or earning gratitude, or from a sense of pride at your own superiority in skill, wealth, status or authority. Serve because you are urged by love. When you succeed, ascribe the success to the grace of God, who urged you on, as Love within you. When you fail, ascribe the failure to your own inadequacy, insincerity or ignorance.Examine the springs of action, disinfect them from all traces of ego. Do not throw the blame on the recipients of the seva, or on your collaborators and co-workers, or on God.

What qualities should we look for in a true Guru?

The true Guru is one, who has no ego or selfishness, and who can raise the shishya (disciple) to his own level. Donning the saffron robe, mouthing a few mantras and expounding some texts are the signs of many gurus these days. The signs of a true Guru are large-heartedness, absolute selflessness, purity in living, freedom from acquisitiveness, absence of envy, and equal-mindedness in his conduct towards everyone. Freedom from envy is an essential quality in a Guru or shishya, because envy is the root cause of many evils. The Guru's role is to lead the shishya on the Godward path. He must teach the shishya the true purpose for which each of his sense organs is to be used - his eyes, his tongue, and his limbs. All the senses are to be used for discovering and experiencing the Divine. This was what Tyagaraja and Pothana commended in their songs. Every action in daily life should be turned into an act of devotion to God.

Many a doctrine have been proposed to bring about equal distribution of resources in society, but which is the best method of them all?

Today all over the world you hear about plans to build a new society. The Universal provision of daily necessities and various amenities, and the equal distribution of wealth are among the declared aims of this movement. This may be desirable. But is it practicable? It may be possible to equally distribute property and possessions, amenities and comforts. But is it possible to limit equally the desires of all persons? If desires are not limited equally, there is bound to be frustration. The socialist doctrine is an important concept. But it is no less essential to recognise the reality of God as the primal source of all things in the world. According to the Indian seers, the source of the food one consumes, the power that sustains all living things and the basis of all objects in creation is God. It is because this basic truth has been forgotten that the world today is be devilled by famines, conflicts, wars and commotion.

What is the importance of Sat-sang?

Satsang means meeting the ‘Sat’, the ‘Sat’ which is spoken of while extolling God as Sat-chit-ananda. Sat’ is the Existence Principle, the ‘Is’ that is the basic truth of the Universe. Align with the Truth, the ‘Sat’ in you, the Satya (Reality) on which the Mitya (false) is imposed by minds that do not see light. By dwelling in that Sat, the flame is lit, light dawns, darkness flees and Jnana Bhaskara (the Sun of Wisdom) rises. When there is hard rock below, you have to bore deeper for tapping the underground perennial pure water. The softer the subterranean soil, the quicker the success. Make your heart soft; then, success is quick in sadhanaTalk soft, talk sweet, talk only of God - that is the process of softening the subsoil. Develop compassion and empathy; engage in service, understand the agony of poverty, disease, distress and despair; and share both tears and cheers with others. That is the way to soften the heart, and help sadhana to succeed.

What is the price we must be prepared to pay for peace and happiness?

Every object in nature, every incident in time, is really speaking, teaching you a lesson. Dakshinamurty was one morning walking in slow steps along the sea-beach. He looked at the waves and drew a lesson therefrom. The waves were slowly and systematically, carrying towards the shore a bit of straw, passing it on from one crest to another, until it was deposited on land! The sea is a broad expanse, it is deep and mighty. But yet, it is constantly engaged in cleaning itself from all extraneous things. It knows that, you must not neglect a desire, for the simple reason that it is a menial straw. Force it back, on to the shore, where it can do no harm. Eternal vigilance is the price of peace and happiness. Dakshinamurty exclaimed, "Wonderful! The Sea has taught me a great lesson." - the lesson that danger lurks, when desire raises its head.

What is the secret to perfection in action?

Every action in daily life should be turned into an act of devotion to God. In Kashi (Benares) the municipal authorities appointed some persons to light the street lights. A sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) was one such employee. He had to fill the lamp with oil and fix a chimney to protect the flame. He used to go to every lamp singing the glory of Rama and cleaning the chimney and lighting the lamp while singing. The municipal authorities noticed that the lamps in the streets in which the sadhaka was lighting the lamps were shining brighter than those elsewhere. They found that a great devotee was lighting the lamps with devotion to God and this accounted for their exceptional brilliance. The moral of this story is that when you do any act in a spirit of dedication, as an offering to God, you can experience joy and find fulfillment.

What is the assurance Swami has given each one of His devotees and what is the commitment He expects from us?

wami's Prema (Divine Love) has no trace of self-interest in it. It is absolutely pure. Swami knows only how to give, not how to receive. Swami's hand is held above for conferring something, not stretched for seeking anything. Moreover, once Swami has declared, "You are Mine", whatever wrong ways they may pursue, Swami will not abandon them. It may be asked why anyone who has been accepted by Swami as "You are Mine," should be subject to hardships and troubles. These troubles are the consequences of their own karma. They have to see that their conduct is right. If, supposing, the Lord blesses a man with a hundred years of life, he should not get puffed up with pride and start jumping from a tree in the confidence that he will live for a century. He may live for a hundred years, but may have his leg broken in the fall. So, in accepting the blessing of God, one should also try to lead a righteous life.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

God is beyond all ages and all forms. Only love is His true form. The same love is present in all forms that you see. – BABA

Each religion emphasises one Name and one Form of God and recommends them for acceptance. Some even insist that God has no other Name or Form. But, the Reality is beyond name and form, It has Akshara (the indestructible, eternal) as the characteristic and Om as the Form. You reach the Akshara stage, the stage of attributeless unity, in three steps of Sadhana: (i) I am Thine, (ii) Thou art mine, and (iii) Thou art myself. Through Sadhana, one must transcend the duality of I and You. I is only the reflection of You in this body. The consummation is reached when duality is superseded. That is why it has been declared, "It is good to be born in a church; but, it is not good to die in it." That is to say, before life ends one must go beyond the limits set by institutionalised religion and reach the vast limitless expanse of the Aathman, which pervades all.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Come just one step forward, I shall take a hundred towards you. - BABA

When I’ve given a word to anyone, even if they turn against Me, I will not bear any ill-will towards them. Even if they revile Me, I shall continue to love them. I will stand up to My pledge, and fight up to the end. Some day they will return to the right path. Owing to the compulsion of circumstances, some changes may take place. They’re not permanent. I will not change My course because of such happenings. This is My second resolve. My third resolve: When I undertake anything for the welfare of all and that it is good for society as a whole, I will not give it up, come what may. Even if the whole world is against Me, I will not turn back; I will only go forward. These are My three resolves: The foot that is put forward will not retreat. I will not go back on the word I have given. I only give and do not receive!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is the sacred responsibility a teacher is entrusted with?

Parents entrust their dearly beloved children to teachers in schools, believing that they are capable and willing to guide the kids and instil into them skills and habits that can later help them to stand up against the hardships and temptations of the world. Teachers are therefore burdened with a great responsibility. When a child needs help, it rushes to the mother; when the mother needs help to equip the child with knowledge and strength of character, she rushes to the teacher. Therefore, teachers have to be more than a mother to children! A teacher’s anxiety about the child's physical, mental and moral health and their vigilant attention and care must be more constant and knowledgeable than the mother's. The teachers must speak to one another only in loving terms. They should not indulge in mutual recrimination, for the tender minds of children will be tarnished by the slightest tinge of hatred that pollutes the atmosphere of love.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What are the essential qualifications of an aspirant? What is dearest to the Lord?

Man has to progress every moment; a stagnant style of living does not benefit him. How long can we tolerate a boy staying in the same class at school? He must proceed from one class to the next higher one, year after year. The spiritual aspirant too should not stagnate in one sadhana. From the master-servant relationship with God, he must advance to the body-limb relationship and reach the stage of merging in the All-inclusive One - that is to say, from dualism, through conditioned non-dualism to monism or non-dualism. In the initial stages, man worships portraits or idols of God in all the sixteen forms of reverential homage such as preliminary concentration (dhyanam), invocation (avahanam), and so on. Good character, good conduct and virtuous life are essential qualifications for the aspirant. Of course, floral offerings are commendable. The sixteen items are good. But, one should progress from this stage to the awareness of the Atma.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is the secret behind the peace and joy a true devotee experiences?

The true devotee always dwells in God, and has no time to know or feel welfare or worries. Attaining the Lord is the one and only idea in the mind. It is hard to understand this nature, except by examples. A small child runs about in fear shouting, “mommy, mommy!”, searching for its missing mother. The mother takes the child in her arms and places it on her lap. The child stops crying and is free from all fear. But can the child calculate and find out the difference between its previous state and its present relief? No. Nor is it necessary to do so. Also, the one who seeks always to serve the Lord will immerse themself in God when the glorious chance comes. In that Presence, no anxiety or trouble can disturb a person. Anxiety and trouble pester only until the moment of attainment; then, all attention is diverted to the experience. The past struggle and travails are forgotten. Therefore, aspirants and devotees must ignore and forget all the thousand troubles that have gone before and be engaged only in the thoughts of the Lord.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Even though we are essentially divine, why is it important to ensure the sacredness of our thoughts and feelings?

Until you become aware of your own Divinity (Deva-tattva), so long as you are conscious of your distinct individuality (jiva-tattva), till you feel you are you and God is God, you cannot but struggle with some attitudes and objectives. This is the Sadhaka stage. In this stage, you must endeavour to equip yourself with the qualities of Love, Sympathy and Compassion. For, without these, Yoga and Jnana cannot be secured. Love is vital. Love is Divine. To render an act fit to be offered to God and pure enough to win His Grace, it has to be a manifestation of Love. The brighter the manifestation, the nearer you are to God. Love is not affected or modified by considerations of caste or creed, or religion; it cannot be tarnished by envy, malice or hate. Preserve Love from being poisoned by these evils; endeavour to cultivate hatred-less and distinction-free feelings.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What can we do to be happy, live peacefully and also contribute to world peace?

If one escapes only from the responsibilities of life in society, peace cannot be enjoyed; it will never come. But, if desires (vasanas) are controlled and eliminated, there is no need at all to run away. Content with what one has, refusing to be worried by the absence of things that one hasn’t, and trying as far as possible to reduce and eliminate desires and passions and hatreds, one should strive to cultivate truth, righteousness, love, and patience (sahana). Cultivate them, and at the same time, practise them systematically. This is the real duty of humanity, the real purpose of human birth. If the above-mentioned four qualities are cultivated and practised by each, there will be no envy between people, selfish grabbing will cease, the interests of others will be respected, and world peace can be stabilised!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

In the pursuit of the spiritual path, first of all the mind should be brought under control

What is the grace we must secure to escape from the cycle of birth and death?

Vedas and Puranas deserve to be read and heard. God’s name is to be recited and listened to. For some ailments, medicines are prescribed for external application while for others, they are given for internal use. But for this universal ailment of the cycle of birth and death (bhava-roga), listening to spiritual discourses (sravana), singing God’s name (kirtana), and other medicines are prescribed for external and internal use. One has to utter as well as hear the Lord’s name.An aspirant might win God’s grace, the guru’s grace, and the grace of devotees of the Lord, but all this grace is of no avail if another grace is not secured, the grace of their own inner consciousness (antah-karana). Without this grace, the aspirant falls into perdition, for all the rest are of no account whatsoever.

It is your duty to recognise all men as your kin and to share your skill with others, so that the maximum benefits accrue therefrom.

How can we express the divine potency that is latent within us?

While the current is without any form, a bulb, a fan or an electric stove has a definite form. In each appliance, it does have a different function. If you say, “Oh current, how helpful you have been to me!” and touch it, you get a shock.

Current has that energy and hence it is a form of the Cosmic Divine. This is also illustrated in the story of Bhasmasura who could reduce anything to ashes through the power he had acquired from the Divine by penance. This inner energy expresses itself in the form of knowledge. Knowledge has to be transformed into skill to achieve balance in life. But people today are killing this knowledge, thereby losing their balance. By losing balance in their lives, they acquire only outward vision and do not cultivate inner vision or insight. When your outlook is projected outwards, your mind starts wavering.

You should maintain balance in life. It is possible only when you transform your knowledge into skill.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

It is only when man has pure feelings within him that his actions can be pure. When he is polluted within, all his actions will be impure.

How can we prevent bad feelings from entering the heart?

One should understand the great significance of human life, which is superior to that of all other species. Because of the body consciousness, man is forgetting his inherent Divinity.

You study a great deal about Prakriti (Nature) and worldly things, and lead an artificial life, without realising that the heart is the seat of Divinity. If you allow bad feelings to enter the heart, it will be polluted and the Divine will have no place therein.

The whole world today is replete with pollution of not only the individual senses but also the five elements. The air is impure; water is polluted and everything you see or hear or touch is polluted. How can you expect to have peace in the world? Vedanta teaches that we should go beyond the mind and realise the inner vision to prevent bad feelings entering the heart and polluting the seat of God.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

You are not the body; you are the embodiments of the Atma. The physical body comes and goes.

How can we overcome narrow vision and experience the Universal Consciousness?

We have to recognise the fact that human life depends on the functioning of the mind. As long as one is governed by the mind one continues to be human. Once one goes beyond the mind, one can enjoy the vastness of the limitless expanse of Cosmic Consciousness.

Here is an example: Suppose you construct a spacious house with a number of bedrooms, living rooms, dining room and bath room. The spacious house appears divided into a number of small rooms. This is because of the walls put up for partitioning into rooms. If the walls are pulled down, the house will be one vast mansion.

Similarly, the body is the wall which limits one's perception to the narrow confines of the body. Once you get rid of this body consciousness, you will experience the vast expanse of the Universal Cosmic Consciousness which is all-pervasive.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is the source of delusion in us and how can we overcome it?

God is Sarvabhoota antaratma - the Indweller in all beings, but there is no change in the Atma. Human lives will continue to be generated like the waves of the ocean. But the ocean of Cosmic Consciousness remains unchanged.

When you make an idol of Krishna in silver, all parts of the idol are silver. When you see the form of Krishna in the idol, you are not aware of the silver. When you want to see only the silver out of which the idol is made, the form is out of your view.

Similarly, when you turn your mind towards God, who is pervading the entire Universe, the mind will be wholly filled with God and you won't see the different forms of the objects in the world. If the mind is directed towards worldly objects, you fail to see the Divinity that pervades all objects.

Vishvam Vishnu Svarupam - The Universe is the form of God. God is the cause and the Universe is the effect. Failure to understand the cause and the effect results in delusion.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Peace is the honey of love in the enchanting flower of life.

How can we develop an attitude of peacefulness in our everyday life?

Understanding becomes easy when you are full of devotion and your devotion is deep-rooted. The form of devotion called peaceful devotion (shanta-bhakti) is the best path for attaining eternal, everlasting bliss.

Become the messenger of the peace that has no beginning or end. Hold forth the light of peace for humanity. Live the ideal life, ever contented, ever joyous, ever happy. The spiritual aspirants and devotees of old reached their goal only through peace.

Peace gave Ramdas, Tukaram, Kabir, Tyagaraja, Nandanar, etc. the fortitude needed to bear all the calumny, torture, and travail that was their lot. An aspirant who bases efforts on these examples will be free of anger, despair, and doubt. The accounts of their struggles and successes, if contemplated upon, are more useful to the aspirant than the contemplation of the powers and accomplishments of the Lord

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

When you have love in your heart, you do not need to worry about anything. God will always be with you, in you, around you and will look after you in all respects

Why should we never consider ourselves as being forlorn? Bhagawan explains using the examples of two exalted beings.

A beggar calls himself an anatha (one without a master or anyone to support him), while asking for alms. This is not correct. For everyone, God is the Natha (support or master). It is only God who is Anatha, because there is no one above Him.

Tyagaraja considered Rama as his saviour and protector and did not care for the wealth of the world. He considered service at Rama's feet as the greatest treasure. Kabir was a poor weaver and he used to share his food with others. When the King sent gold and provisions to him through his officials, Kabir exclaimed: "For whom has the king sent all these?"

They said: "The King sent these things to you as you are anatha (helpless)." He replied: "I am not without support. Rama is my Natha (master). You cannot say I have none to support me. It is only Rama who has none to support Him. Give these to Him." Kabir said, Anatha means God. We should understand the correct meanings of words.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is the ultimate consummation we must not forget to aspire for? How is that connected with habits we practice daily?

The first spiritual practice (sadhana) is to search for the faults and weaknesses within yourself and to strive to correct them and become perfect.

The unceasing toil of each succeeding day has as its aim and justification this consummation: to make one’s last days sweet and pleasant. But each day also has its evening. If the day is spent in good deeds, then evening blesses us with deep, invigorating and refreshing sleep, the sleep which is akin to samadhi. One has a short span of life on Earth. Even in this short life, one can attain divine bliss, by wisely and carefully using time.

Two people, the same in appearance, ostensibly of the same mould, grow under the same conditions, but one turns out to be an angel while the other stays on with their animal nature. What’s the reason for this differential development? Habits! Behaviour formed out of habits, and the character into which that behaviour has solidified. People are creatures of character!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Why should we not lose heart as we labour on the path of Sadhana?

Any task can be accomplished by practice. Practice is necessary for everything in life, whether it is walking, talking, eating, reading, or writing. When you are a child, your mother teaches you words like mother (amma), father (appa). All these come only with practice.

You say that you want peace. For that also you need to put in some effort. All of you are squatting on the floor. Without practice, you cannot even sit in a cross-legged posture. If you want to perform a small drama, you start practising at least ten days in advance. The world is like a stage. All are actors. God is the director. You need practice for everything in this drama of life.

Divinity can be attained only by following the spiritual path. The fire of wisdom is in every human being. If you neglect this fire of wisdom, it gets covered by the ash of ego, attachment, and hatred. Where does the ash come from? It comes only from the fire and ultimately covers the fire itself. Similarly, Divinity is in every human being. If you want to visualise your innate Divinity, first of all, you have to remove the ash of ego, attachment, and hatred.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Why is it very important to internalise the purpose of life and act in accordance to it?

To a superficial observer, life appears to be a rotation of eating and drinking, toiling and sleeping. But verily life has a much greater meaning, a deeper significance. Life is a sacrifice (yajna). Each little act is an offering to the Lord. If the day is spent in deeds performed in this spirit of surrender, what else can sleep be except total immersion in the Godhead (samadhi)?

People commit the great fault of identifying themselves with the body. People accumulate a variety of things for the upkeep and comfort of the body. Even when the body becomes weak and decrepit with age, people attempt to bolster it by one means or another. But how long can death be postponed? When Yama’s warrant comes, each must depart. Position, pride, and power - all vanish before death.

Realising this, strive day and night, with purity of body, mind and spirit, to realise the Higher Self by the service of all living beings. The body must be preserved as a vehicle for this service. Remember, you are not this body; this body cannot be you!

Bagavn Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai

Where is God and where can we search for Him?

To say that I am the body (Aham dehatma) is a sign of ignorance. This is dualism (dvaita). To say that I am the individual soul (Aham jivatma) is qualified non-dualism (visishtadvaita). To say that I am the universal Self (Aham Paramatma) is non-dualism (advaita). In the three terms dehatma, jivatma, and Paramatma, Atma is common. One should know the difference between these three terms to understand Divinity.

The terms bhur, bhuvah, and suvah in the Gayatri Mantra convey the same meaning. Bhur refers to bhuloka, which consists of worldly matter. This can be described as materialisation, which is represented by the human body. Bhuvah represents the life principle, which makes the body move. Hence, it can be described as vibration. It is due to the presence of vibration within that the body is able to move. Therefore, the body is materialisation, the life principle is vibration, and the Atma is radiation.

All these three are very much present in you. Then where do you search for Divinity? Why should you search for it? When you understand this truth, you will realise that you are everything.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba
