Thought for the Day

Today everyone is eager to read or listen to the news that comes to them from all corners of the world. They think that it is their mission to know everything that is happening, but does anyone make an attempt to hear what is coming from within them? An individual who cannot understand and recognise their own nature has not achieved anything. All that you learn by way of education is apparently only for eking out a living. This undesirable quality has become an illusion of our mind. The basis for this desire is your attachment and hatred. This attachment and hatred are commonly found in one who thinks that they are different from the environment around them. So long as one thinks that a particular car or house belongs to them, then there will be attachment to whatever they think belongs to them, and a dislike of things which they think does not belong to them.

Thought for the Day

Even if one does not attempt to seek God, one can at least seek peace, joy, happiness and independence (shanti, santosha, soukhyam and swatantra)? People nowadays do not seek these, nor do they try to learn how to get them! The top spins perpetually and has no rest; people too pine and labor forever and ever, and have no relief from the spinning. The only peace and joy they get now are momentary; here now, gone the next minute. Pain puts a stop to joy; joy is but the absence of pain. Why must one live for years as a burden on earth, consuming so much of rice or wheat year after year, with no return in joy or peace to himself or others? The petromax light will shine bright only when you pump air vigorously; your light too is dim and well nigh out; pump vigorously, that is to say, engage yourself in spiritual practice and illumine your mind better and spread light on all who come near you.

Thought for the Day

People do not believe in God, but believe newspapers and all that is published therein. They believe in things they have not seen and consider what their ears hear to be true. A blind person is in darkness and when he denies there is light, do we need to attach any value to his denial? No! On the contrary, you see a plane zooming in the sky; someone tells you that it is flown by a pilot, but you refuse to believe because you do not see him from where you are. Is this appropriate? Isn’t it reasonable to guess that a flying plane must have a pilot? If you want to verify, you must get to the plane and see the pilot! It would be unwise to deny his existence standing on the ground. So too seeing the Universe, you must firmly believe in the existence of God, and not deny His presence because you have not been able to see Him.

Thought for the Day

A young mother puts her baby to sleep and when the little one is asleep, she attends to other household works. But all the while her attention is on the baby, and her thoughts are always about when the baby would wake up. Even if she is engaged in an urgent and pressing work, her attention is on the baby, and as soon as she hears the cry, she comes running. She does not wait to analyse in what tune (raga) and tempo (tala) the baby is crying. Just as the mother comes running as soon as she hears the baby’s cry, so also, when a person cries to the Lord from the depths of their heart, the Lord responds instantly and helps every devotee. God does not ask what path this devotee is adopting or what bhajans are being sung to call Him, etc. But He looks for the sincerity with which the devotee has cried out.

Thought for the Day

Worry about what might happen to life, reputation, wealth and authority in the very next moment is haunting everyone; insecurity stalks the land, torn by hatred and greed. People have lost the comfort of self-reliance; they have no faith in their own strength, and no confidence in others. Man is the most devalued entity today; everything else has risen in value. Man is cheap and he can be neglected with impunity. He knows not his own greatness or worth. He does not know how to elevate the smallest act of his into a means of realising the Grace of the Lord. He does not know the alchemy by which every failure or disappointment can be transmuted into a golden chance for self-surrender and for building up the bulwark of Bhakthi(devotion). He fritters away precious time in paltry activities and petty pleasures, which lower his self-respect and injure his physical and mental calibre. One must try to live up to the great traditions of one’s forefathers and the great men of one’s motherland.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

God is all-powerful and can melt even stony hearts, yet He will not undertake to do so. Human beings have the strength to correct their path by adhering to the goals of life (Purusharthas — dharma, artha, kama, moksha), and so God will expect that you should first set right your thoughts by your own efforts and then seek God’s help. Your life must be just like the village woman who carries a pot filled with water on her head. She would be talking and joking along with other women as she walks along. Yet would take great care of the pot of water on her head. Similarly, while we live in the normal world taking things lightly as they come, we will have to take great care of the spiritual aspects as well without forgetting or ignoring them. Whatever work and task you may undertake, if you have your attention on Divinity, then God will take care of you always.
Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Form a satsang (holy company), where you meet and exchange truths and virtuous talk, where you study holy books and discourses on the glory of God. Why waste precious time in scandals about others and criticisms of others' behaviour? Cultivating envy, malice, hatred and anger against others is an evil pastime that recoils on oneself. In everyone there is resident the self-same divine spark; so caviling at another is tantamount to caviling at Divinity. The game of life is worth playing and becomes interesting only when there are bounds and rules which limit and control. Imagine a game of football without any rules or bounds for the field. It will be chaos; it will be a free fight; it will be a riot. No one can say who wins and how. Righteousness (Dharma) and Divinity (Brahma) are the boundaries of the field. The virtues fight against the vicious tendencies. Play the game, paying heed to the warnings of ‘foul’ and ‘out’!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

There are certain essential remedial action, without doing which to expect an Avatar to simply remove all suffering is very foolish. Firstly, you should make an attempt to make good use of the mental and physical strengths that have been gifted to you. If you are so lazy as not to use the mental and physical strengths you have, what will you do with divine strengths? Just because God gave you enough food, for you to expect that God must help you in transferring this food to your stomach is indeed a lazy idea. You should make good use of God’s gifts of your hands, a palate, and a mouth. If you choose not to use your body, mind and mental strength in a good way, then, no one can help you!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Providing housing, clothing and food gives physical happiness (Sukha); educating in skills and worldly information gives a means of livelihood. But ancient scriptures proclaim, Na Sukat Labhate Sukham - Real and lasting happiness cannot be won through physical happiness. Happiness that is not shaken, diminished or modified by good fortune or bad can come only by disciplining the mind and faith in a Higher Power that guides all your words, thoughts and deeds. The lamp of that spiritual awareness must be lit and fed, so that every being can walk that path and proceed unharmed. The Scriptures also declare that you can attain that everlasting happiness through duty performed as 'worship'. Dedication to your duty reveals the Oneness of the Universe when your Intelligence is cleared of the dust of doubt and delusion. Your body is a temple of the Lord and the atmosphere of this temple is by its very nature filled with love for all beings.

Thought for the Day

Although humanity has been exposed to many Advents(Avatar), people have not yet fully understood all aspects of an Advent. We should examine the reason why the formless Lord takes the form of a human being and comes into the midst of humans. It is so that He may mix with the human beings and set examples and ideals, and convey to them all aspects that they should learn. Many ask innocently and ignorantly why anAvatar, who is all powerful, should subject Oneself to all troubles; and why should He tolerate hunger and suffering all around. An Avatar who has all the powers should be able to remove all such suffering in one moment. If there is any meaning in such a question, why should an Avatar come in human form at all? He can remain as formless Divinity and do all these things from that position itself. In time, and under certain conditions whatever has to be done must be done and such acts have to be performed at a human level.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Everyone must develop the spirit of sacrifice (tyaga). You must serve the people with your body. You have to cherish good and noble thoughts in your mind. You must use your wealth for supporting educational and other institutions to help the people. Give food to the starving. This is the way to lead a purposeful and sublime life. Life has been given to you not to become fat yourself. The body is the basic instrument for the practice of righteousness (Dharma). Dedicate your entire time to service and for the proper discharge of your duties. God alone can transform your spiritual efforts into a transcendental experience. God is omnipresent; He is everywhere and within you. You are Divine! Ensure your spiritual practices (Sadhana)are not for any selfish reason. It must promote the good of others. Giving up selfishness, cultivating selfless love for others, and sanctify your lives. Then you will experience Sakshatkara, the vision of the Divine from within you.

Thought for the Day

Today we are celebrating Guru Poornima. The day is usually observed as an occasion for offering worship to the Guru (the religious or other preceptor). There are eight different types of gurus, who impart spiritual instructions of different kinds. Among these, the really important guru is "Vihitha Guru", the preceptor who removes the doubts in the minds of the disciples and reveals to them the process of Self-discovery and Self-realisation. The guru should destroy the darkness of ignorance (about one's Reality) and illumine the mind of the disciple. The illumination must result in the perception of the One Reality that is beyond name, form and attributes. No purpose is served by going in search of gurus. There is a guru in each of us. It is the Atmic principle. It is the Eternal Witness functioning as Conscience in everyone. With this Conscience as guide, let all actions be done.

Thought for the Day

You might say that the karma of the previous birth has to be consumed in this birth and that no amount of grace can save man from that. Evidently, someone has taught you to believe so. But I assure you, you need not suffer from karma like that. When a severe pain torments you, the doctor gives you a morphine injection and you do not feel the pain, though it is there in the body. Grace is like the morphine; the pain is not felt, though you go through it! Grace takes away the malignity of the karma which you have to undergo. There are also dated drugs, which become ineffective after a certain time. Well, so too, with Grace, the effect of karma is rendered null, even though you go through the experience! Hence, it is wrong to say the‘Lalata likhitam’ (fate written on the forehead) cannot be rendered ineffective. Grace can surpass anything; nothing can stand in its way. Remember, it is the grace of the ‘All-mighty’

Thought for the Day

You have been listening to My discourses for years. If you are merely content to listen, it is sheer waste of time. You have to ruminate over what you have heard and try to put into practice the teachings. Sravanam (listening), Mananam (reflecting) andNidhidhyasanam (putting into practice what has been learnt) are the three stages in the spiritual journey. Repeating parrot-like what one has heard earns not even the merit of enjoying the sweetness of the words. Claiming to be devotees and going about as devotees, few are caring to find out what is true devotion. Bhajans and Japas(singing and repeating God's name) and performance of yagas andyajnas (sacrifices and rituals) are not the real marks of devotion. They are merely exercises in washing out one's impurities. All the nine kinds of worship are also designed to achieve purity of mind and heart. But purity should find expression in action just as clothes that have been washed have to be worn. Without purity in action, the real nature of the Self cannot be recognised.

Thought for the Day

In every man there is a combination of the Mayatatwa (the Deluding principle) and the Brahmatatwa (the Divine principle). Without the Deluding principle, the Brahmatatwa cannot be experienced. Without the Brahmatatwa, the power of maya cannot be manifest. On the surface of the vast ocean, countless waves are seen. There must be a force that causes these waves. It is the power of wind on the water of the ocean that produces the waves. Without the force of wind there can be no waves. Maya can be compared to this wind. The water in the ocean can be compared to the form of Sat-Chit-Ananda. The Jiva-tatwaor the individual selves are the waves of the ocean. To recognise the illusory character of the world does not mean giving up all actions or family ties. Actions should be done in a spirit of detachment. Relationships should be maintained without deep attachment. It is not renunciation of action that is required. Renunciation in action is what is necessary.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

People today tend to be naive in their actions. They go after nondescript preceptors and seek messages from them. When the preceptors are themselves wallowing in bondage, how are they going to free you? How can someone filled with delusions themselves rid you of your delusions? Some people are constantly seeking some spiritual messages (mantra). What is the mantra you need? It is the understanding of your true nature. This mantra is in you. Everyone within has the mantra, tantra and yantra (the spiritual message, the method of practicing it and the instrument for implementing it). Your process of breathing verily contains the mantra you need: So-Ham (I am That). What is the yantra (the instrument)? Your physical body! What is the tantra? Your heart! When you have all the three, why go to anyone for a message? It is a sign of weakness and ignorance. Do not go in search of Gurus.

Thought for the Day

Everyone is now seeking comfort and pleasure! If you tell someone that they can eat whatever they like and as much as they like, they will be delighted; if you add that they might develop, as a consequence, some illness, they will treat you as an enemy. No regimen or control is popular. But strength is derived only from control, restraint, and regulation. A person becomes tough and capable of endurance only if they welcome hardships. Struggle, and you get the strength to succeed. Seek the basis for the seen in the unseen. The tall skyscraper has a deep base reaching into the earth. This seen world has, as its base, the unseen Divine (Paramatma); your body is the vehicle through which you can search, investigate, and discover that base. Your body is an instrument for doing work (karma); prayer and meditation (japa and dhyana) will purify your intelligence and make it an instrument for winning grace, and ultimately attaining self-realisation.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya sai Baba

Thought for the Day

The relationship with the Lord is described as developing from Salokya(in the vicinity) to Samipya (nearness), to Sarupya (Form of the master) and then on to Sayujya (absorption into the Form). You can understand this clearly, if you take Salokya to mean, being in the kingdom ruled by the Lord, or as a servant in the palace where He dwells. You are under His fostering care. In the Samipya stage, you feel you are a personal attendant on the Lord, privileged to be near Him and to be called upon by Him for some personal service. You have neared the principle of Godhead, intellectually; you feel His presence ever, emotionally. Next, the stage of Sarupya is like being the brother of the King. He can wear the same robes. One has the splendour, the glory that bespeaks the full blossoming of the Divine latent within. Lastly, when you are the son, the heir apparent, you approximate as much as possible to the Royal Power and so, you can say, ‘I and My Father are One.’ These are the stages of the soul's journey to Realisation of the Oversoul.

Thought for the Day

Upa-vasa (Upa-near; vasa-living) means ‘living in the proximity of God’. Periodical fasting is prescribed to help your digestive system overhaul itself and get much needed rest. Vows, vigils, fasts, and all kinds of voluntarily imposed or involuntarily suffered hardships are to be looked upon as promoting spiritual strength, not weakening your physical stamina. Gardeners dig around the roots, and clip the wayward twigs only to make the plant grow fast into a trim and tall tree. Some people, however, fast , Monday for Shiva,Thursday for Me!,Friday for Lakshmi, Saturday to propitiate Shani and so on! These misdirected aspirants spoil their health and well-being by overdoing the vow of fasting. When thoughts of food bother you, and pangs of hunger disturb you, then, it is much better to eat than fast. Remember the purpose of fast is to spend time in the contemplation of God and not to punish the body by cutting a meal or a series of meals.

Thought for the Day

Perhaps you think that the devotional singing (Bhajan orSankerthan) or service (Seva) that you do is all that is required to ‘become a devotee’. No! These are only sanctifying acts that purify your mind. They are actions(Karma) which elevate you and help you spend your time purposefully. They promote detachment from body consciousness and from objective pleasures. It is because you are encouraged to cultivate this attitude and taste the joy of renunciation, you experience happiness in a sacred place like Prasanthi Nilayam. These moments of bliss (Atmic Bliss) never decline or change. Continue to practice these always. When your goal is to serve the Lord and adore your Beloved, every step and act is a spring of joy, and every moment and opportunity becomes a valuable chance!

Thought for the Day

Service of fellow human beings is more needed than service to the Lord Himself. In fact, such service is equal to the service of God. That is the path of real devotion. For what greater means can there be to please God than pleasing His very own children? The Purusha Sukta speaks of the Divine (Purusha) as having a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet. This is to say, “All are He!”. Though there is the mention of a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet, there is no mention of a thousand hearts! There is only one Heart! The same blood circulates through all the hands, eyes, feet and limbs. When you tend the limb, you are indeed tending the whole body. Similarly, when you serve your fellow beings, you are indeed serving God!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

The Mahabharata is an ideal text for peace lovers. So long as we are human beings, we cannot understand and follow the actions of Divinity. But we must accept and follow the actions done by God come as a human being. In the present conditions, if we accept and practice the ideals that were demonstrated in the Mahabharata, all countries will certainly prosper. For example, when Krishna went to negotiate peace and was asked by Duryodhana to accept his hospitality, Lord Krishna said that as he has come on a mission, He had no right to accept the hospitality till the mission was completed. So he declined the hospitality offered by Duryodhana and stayed in Vidura’s house. Such code of conduct was being observed in those days even in political negotiations; the moral mettle of our ancients were of a very high order. Thus every action of the Pandavas and of Lord Krishna in Mahabharata is an ideal lesson for us.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

At holy temples such as Tirupati or Bhadrachalam, you find only a stone shaped as an idol. But when the feeling of devotion permeates that stone, it becomes the Supremest Treasure of the human mind. Many waste precious time, debating which path of worship - duty, devotion or wisdom - is superior over another. They are complementary. Teach your mind the secret of transmuting your every act with devotion into sacred worship. Then you will never suffer from disappointment and grief. The Lord is so full of Grace that He will willingly guide and guard every being who surrenders unto Him. To win His Grace, all you must do, is become permeated with righteousness (Dharma) so that your every act is ‘God-worthy’! With the sharp chisel of your intellect, shape your mind into a perfect image of the Lord! Then you will shine with the splendor of Divine. Dedicate yourself to this noble ideal from now!

Thought for the Day

From the four Vedas, our ancients have picked up four very special statements (Mahavakhyas) and taught their meaning to us. These four are Prajnanam Brahma, Ayam Atma Brahma, Tat Tvam Asi and Aham Brahmasmi. These statements imply that Brahman (Divine) is synonymous to Prajnana (Knowledge), and that the Atma (Soul) is Brahman, and that Brahman is yourself. In these we will be able to see that in the dissolved state everything is one and the same. In this state of dissolution all bad and good, things that are attractive and things that are not attractive, appear as one and the same. All things look as if they are one and the same. The difference between names and forms is not distinguishable. In this state one can only experience bliss. Simply because one does not perceive light within, the individual should not say that there is no Brahman within. In everyone this capacity to shine is present as Prajnana.

Before the start of the Mahabharata war, at the advice of Lord Krishna, Yudhishthira and his brothers, went up to Bhishma, touched his feet, and said, “Grandfather, ever since we lost our father, you looked after us and brought us up; unfortunately, today we have to fight with you. Please give us permission for this battle.” Bhishma was very much moved that even under those terrifying conditions of battle, Yudhishthira was doing his duty and came all the way to seek his permission. Bhishma embraced him and said, “Even in the battlefield, you are observing dharma and it gives me great pleasure. You will be victorious in this battle because you are acting according to dharma. Those who protect righteousness (dharma) will in turn be protected by dharma.” Such is the highest order of regulatory conduct taught by Lord Krishna; ponder over this and wonder if we, as human beings, are observing appropriate rules and code of conduct.

God is one, but each individual can and must create a form for themselves according to their taste. When salt is in the sea, it is not distinct from the sea. It is a part of the ocean. This salty taste is a quality present in the entire ocean. Do we have to drink and taste the entire ocean to experience this saltiness? One drop of water suffices to tell us that the ocean water is salty. Similarly even if you experience a small part of the aspect of Divine (Brahman) present within your heart, you can understand the divine. There are many tube lights in a home, and we think they are different. Indeed the light coming from each tube light is different, but the current that flows through all the tube lights is the same. All human beings in this world are like tube lights, and God, in the form ofShaktipata (spiritual energy), shines in all human tube lights.

All the lessons that great saints teach are merely like guideposts. The best that a guidepost can do is to tell you that if you travel in that way, you will reach this particular destination; and if you travel along another path, you will reach a different place. The actual ups and downs along a specific path will be understood only by the people who undertake that journey. One can speak about a million things, but you cannot experience wisdom merely by speaking and not practicing what you preach. Today, hatred, injustice, and fear have filled all our lives. Youth have abundant energy and capacity to remove these evil forces. They should make an effort to understand the sacred ideals from our scriptures. The spirit of nobility and sacrifice which pervaded the lives of ancients is contained in the blood flowing in you! Be prepared to believe in and fully practice what you hear from noble saints and set an example.

The scholar who is humble and respectful towards everyone is truly a great person

Consider this example. They bring a large number of oranges in a lorry and dump them in a factory. When the oranges are brought in, some of them are green, some yellow, some ripe, some overripe, and so on. From all these oranges, they extract the juice and bottle it under a trade name. Once the juice is extracted and put in a bottle, you no longer see the different forms of the oranges which were present before. One can not say which part of the juice comes from which orange. Similarly, when all of us have merged ourselves in Divinity, we will not quarrel over individual forms and names. We will only see the one common aspect of divinity (Brahman) shining in everyone.

We generally think that the Gita consists of certain teachings which will help us and teach us renunciation, and take us along the spiritual path. This is not the correct way of understanding. We should recognise that the Gita gives us teachings which will help us to run our daily lives and meet the situations which we come across. Krishna established the truth that our spiritual life and our daily worldly life are not two distinct compartments. He demonstrated that our daily life is something intimately connected with spiritual life. He showed the need for harmony and connection between one's thoughts, words and deeds. He proclaimed that in order that one may have good thoughts, the mind is very important. In order that one may communicate these thoughts to the world, word is very important. In order to put this into action, one’s deeds are equally important.

All work is God’s work; He inspires, He helps, He executes and He enjoys! Please Him with your efforts.

The tree of life is a tree of delusion, with all its branches, leaves and flowers. You can realise it as such, when you do all acts as dedicated offerings to God. See Him as the sap through every cell, as the Sun warming and building every little plant. See Him in all, worship Him through all, for He is all! Engage in activity, but fill it with devotion: It is devotion that sanctifies! A piece of a paper is almost trash, but if it is a certificate you have earned, you value and treasure it, don’t you? It even becomes a passport for your promotion in life! So also it is the intent and thought (Bhava) behind your actions that matter, not the outward pomp and show (Bahya).Work, Worship and Wisdom are complementary, not contradictory! Do not separate them! Work is like your feet, Worship is your hands and Wisdom is your head. All the three must co-operate throughout your life!
