Thought for the Day

What is the foremost quality of a human being? It is speaking truth. To speak untruth and talk irresponsibly does not behove a human being. If you indulge in useless and indiscriminate talk, how can it be called truth? In fact, truth has to dance on your tongue. Before you speak something, you must enquire whether it is the truth or not. ‘Truth is one, not two.’ If there is duality, it cannot be truth. We have to speak only truth which emerges from our heart. The entire world has emerged from truth and everything merges into truth. The clouds moving in the sky sometimes obscure the Sun. It is not possible to remove the clouds. They just come and go. Once the clouds move away, the resplendent Sun is fully visible. Similarly, it is only when the dark clouds of confusions in our heart are cleared, truth manifests.

One may have acquired a lot of knowledge and spent one’s entire life in education but what is the use of this if one’s mean qualities have not been shed. You may spend a lot of time and learn many things but it will only make you argumentative. By education of such type, you can never acquire complete wisdom. Today the entire life of many people is dedicated to simply imitating others. Many students are destroying their own ideas and individuality and are getting addicted to the process of imitating others. Divyatma Swarupas, if you desire the security, safety and the wellbeing of your country, then it is essential for you to develop three things! They are: service to the country, sacrifice without being selfish, and devotion to spirituality. There is a great need to train young people who have a strong determination in this regard.

Thought for the Day

The basis for the entire world is the love (prema) of the Lord. Even if one is able to learn by heart the essence of all the scriptures (Vedas), and is able to compose poetry in a very attractive manner, yet if that person does not have a purified heart, he is a useless person. What other greater truth can I communicate to you today? The present day’s education is not real education. It appears that the education of today is merely an avocation to enable you to make a living. While pursuing such a path which enables you to eke out a livelihood, you also promote individual selfishness. The aim of real education should be character development. That kind of education in which there is no sacredness and character is useless. What is the use of acquiring so many different types of education? You must try to learn that wisdom, through which you can escape death.

Thought for the Day

Embodiments of Love! There is no need to search for God anywhere, says the Bible. Today people are in search of God. Why do you search for Him when He is everywhere? You are God. All spiritual practices (sadhana) will go in vain if you do not know your true identity. Instead of asking others, “Who are you?” it is better to ask yourself, “Who am I?” “This is my book”, we say. Then who is this “I”? This feeling of “my” is illusion (maya). Know who you are. All this is matter, it is negative. You are the master of this material world. Master the mind and be a mastermind. Make every effort to know your true identity. To know this, you should first give up body attachment. People are heroes in doing experiments in the laboratory, but zeroes in experience. Instead, be heroes in the practical field.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

If we develop compassion and goodness (maitri), God will appear to be close to us. Whether we are in pain or pleasure, in sorrow or trouble, at all times we must develop our heart in such a way that we are able to receive Paramatma’s Prema (God’s love). On the other hand, if we entertain evil qualities like wanting to commit sin, or listen to things which one should not listen to, or hurt and harm others, then justice, goodness and honesty will never remain anywhere near us. Therefore, you must develop sacred qualities. The Pandavas were such noble people, that is why by right they enjoyed the proximity of the Lord. For thePandavas, Krishna was the life-giving breath, and to Krishna, His body was the Pandavas. For the Pandavas, there was not a single moment when Krishna was not present. Whatever they saw or did, it was only by the prompting and the strength they received from Krishna.

IEEE [The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ] 14/9/ 2012 அன்று அதிகார பூர்வமாக அறிவித்தது.

Thought for the Day

Without removing bondage to senses and our body, we cannot progress in life. Hence we must control our senses. To get effective results, we must first undertake to promote love, compassion and sacrifice. When we fill our heart with these three qualities, it will blossom into a beautiful garden with blooming flowers (Nandanavana). On the other hand, if we fill it with qualities like hatred, jealousy and anger then it will become a stinking pool. Everyone should introspect and decide whether we want our heart to be a Nandanavana or an unclean, smelly pool. All of you must make every attempt to fill your heart with sacred qualities. When we look at happy people, we must feel happy at their happiness. When we look at suffering and trouble, we must also share their sufferings. This attitude is called maitri-bhava.Make all attempts to promote compassion and goodness.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Pine for the Lord, like a young calf pines for its mother! Take a young calf into a place where there are a thousand cows and leave it loose. It will find its own mother - every calf will do it right! So too, you must know where you get all your sustenance and support from. Every being gets its succor and relief only from God, from whom you have originated. Take to the spiritual path, with a sense of urgency for, death is waiting to snatch life from you! Forget all petty desires. Do not revel and waste precious moments in empty pleasures. The reason you do so is only because you identify yourself with the body. The body is but a dwelling place, a vehicle, and encasement. See yourself as a resident in it, and almost immediately, your grief will disappear. You will become less egocentric and feel kinship with others, who like you are mere residents in their bodies.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Those who respect us and our ideals, and those who have a concern for our well being are considered as our relations or friends. Those who hate us, and those who go contrary to our expectations, and those who cause pain and loss to us are regarded as enemies. On one occasion Kabir had said that we should keep the company of those who abuse us. The reason for this is that although we may commit several sins, the people who point out our sins are going to remove our sins by their abuse. It is in this context that we say that if someone ridicules us, then this will result in the removal of our sin. In reality, those people who help us to get rid of our sins are our friends. Those people who promote sins in us are our enemies. Thus, it is those who abuse and ridicule us who are to be considered as our friends as they remove our imperfections. The ideas that come up in our own mind are the cause for considering something as good or bad.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

When you dive into the sea, you must seek pearls; when you go to theKalpavriksha (the wish fulfilling tree) ask for the highest bliss. Do not crave for the smaller when the vastest is available for just a little more effort. There is a natural craving in all to become one with the vast, the Supreme and the Limitless, for in the cave of each heart, there resides the self-same Supreme. When you are immersed in the bliss (ananda) of the Lord, you are master of all the lesser anandas too. But this anandamust be directed along useful channels of activity. The value of water can be known only when there is scarcity not when all the taps are pouring plenty of it into the buckets. When tanks and wells go dry, men cry out for a cup of water. So too is with this ananda. Gather it, garner it, develop it and irrigate the parched heart with it, while you can.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

In this very long journey called life, you should travel with fewer luggage (desires). Hence the quote, ‘Less luggage more comfort, makes travel a pleasure’. So from today, practice and adopt the noble dictum of ceiling on desires. Aspire to cut short your desires day by day. You are under the mistaken notion that happiness lies in the fulfillment of desires. But in fact, happiness begins to dawn when desires are totally eradicated. When you reduce your desires, you advance towards the state of renunciation. You have many desires. What do you get out of them? You are bound to face the consequences when you think of something as yours. When you claim a piece of land as yours, then you will have to reap the harvest. This instinct of ego and attachment will put you to suffering. You will be blissful the moment you give up ego and attachment.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

For someone who is blinded by ego and is unable to see anything good around them, is life going to give them any sweetness at all? For the one who never does any good, is life going to be an easy cake-walk? For the one who is leading a sinful life, is any pleasure going to come their way in future? Who is God and who is the devotee? Who is the teacher and who is the disciple? Who is the writer and who is the actor? If you choose not to apply your God-gifted intelligence to understand these answers, who is at fault? In your daily living, you are so busy establishing connection with so many people. Amongst them, you think some are your friends, you consider some others as your enemies, and spend time with those you ‘like’. Remember, for everyone, your own Self is your best friend or your worst enemy.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the day

Today there is hatred and anger everywhere. Wherever you look, there is desire, enmity, and fear. How do you expect to be at peace? Light the lamp of love within. Then fear and illusion will disappear and you will have the vision of the Self. Otherwise you are bound to suffer. Many people make several attempts today to be happy and blissful. Where do you get bliss from? Is it in the material things, in individuals, or in books? No, not at all! Bliss is within one’s own Self. You have forgotten your true Self which is the source of bliss and are struggling hard for artificial happiness outside. Awaken to the reality that lies within your heart, which is the seat of all bliss. The principle of love originates from within your heart, not from the world. Develop selfless love more and more, and exercise a ceiling on your desires. You can be happy only when your desires are controlled.

Thought for the Day

People who are young have to make a long journey in this train called society. The older people in this train will alight at the stations enroute. So the young people should be prepared to take the necessary steps to rectify the defects in this train. You must also set right the faults in your motherland, and imprint good and noble ideas in your mind. Today if you think that a particular action your elders are doing is not right, you should not yourselves do the same thing when you grow up. When you become older, you should put into action what you now think are the good actions of your elders. What you regard as sin should be kept away and you should never participate in them. The harmony in the words you utter, the deeds you do and the thoughts you get is your true penance (tapas) in daily living.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Embodiments of love! Through the power of speech you can conquer kingdoms. Through speech you can also lose all your wealth. People acquire kinsmen and friends through speech and lose them too by their words. Through words again, you can even lose your life. Words are the root cause of all these circumstances. Remember, speech is your important armour whether you experience loss or gain, prosperity or adversity, pain or pleasure. You are bestowed with many gifts. Your life is extremely precious. Time is highly valuable. Your heart is very tender. Your mind is a great possession. Endowed with all these valuable things, why do you conduct yourself as a mean, ignorant and miserable being? Don’t forget your divine nature, by immersing yourself in worldly pleasures and in mundane desires. Don’t harden your heart, which is soft and compassionate by nature, into a stone. Humanness should spontaneously manifest itself from within your heart and overflow with compassion.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

A plantain tree has a number of uses: the plantain leaf is used to serve a meal, its flower in cooking, and the trunk is helpful for binding and packing things as a good string-yielding substance, but its main use is in the bunch of bananas! You take all the trouble of planting and growing the tree for the sake of bananas, not its leaves, strings, the inner soft core, or the flower. So too, the main use of this human body is the realisation of the Divine, the rest is all incidental. You may say, ‘Oh the hands have so much to do!’ Though you may use it for all purposes, its chief purpose is to pray, to worship God, to hold His Feet. Ears are designed to hear God’s glory, and the eyes to witness His manifestations! The tongue is often misused to talk scandal, or flatter! Use it as God willed it, to sing hymns of Divine Glory.

Thought for the Day

Today everyone is troubled by worry and anxiety. There is not a moment when you are free from worries. “To be born is a worry, to live on earth is a worry; world is a cause of worry and death too is a reason of worry; entire childhood is a worry and so is old age; life is a worry, failure is a worry; all actions and difficulties cause worry; even happiness too is a mysterious worry”, says a Telugu poem! Body attachment is the primary cause of all anxieties. It is impossible to experience happiness without undergoing difficulties and worries. Pleasure is an interval between two pains. You undertake various activities, of which some are good and some bad. Your thought (sankalpa) is the root cause of this duality. Good thoughts lead to good actions and vice versa. You are the embodiment of resolutions and negations (sankalpas
and  vikalpas).  True spiritual practice lies in controlling your thoughts and aberrations.

Fill your hearts with the light of love (Prema) so that the evil qualities of hate, greed and conceit find no place therein

The Vedas teach us that our heart is like a sky and in the sky of our heart, mind is the Moon, eyes and intelligence are like the Sun. In the sky of your heart, treat your thoughts as passing clouds. If in the sky of our heart, there are millions of names of the Lord shining like the stars, and your mind shining like the moon, then you are well-positioned to achieve happiness. Happiness is union with God. Train your minds to be like the full moon and cleanse your hearts. Lord Krishna desires that you keep your mind pure and accept truth and honesty as your foundational life principles. Our own conduct is responsible for the decay or the ageing of our body. Our desires drive our behavior. Do not live in the world to merely fulfill your desires. Pain and pleasure are like passing clouds which move about in our heart. So treat them as such and nothing more.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Your heart is a big vessel. Fill it with the qualities of Truth, Love and Sacrifice

So long as one has a form, it is quite natural that they think of that form; but since that form has to be forgotten some day or the other, it is good to concentrate on the formless supreme and give up attachment to a form. Vedanta teaches us the philosophy of detachment (vairagya) to help in this process of concentrating on the formless supreme power which is behind every form. It is inevitable that the soul (jiva) leaves the body. This body is like a water bubble on the surface of water. This water bubble is born out of water, lives on water, and survives on water, and finally it gets dissolved in water. To think that one is full of weakness is not correct. The correct attitude is to regard God as formless, without attributes. We should take it that God is present in us. That should be the right attitude

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Fill your day with constructive thoughts, consoling words and compassionate acts

Every day is a sacred day when you chant the name of God, yearn for His proximity and experience the bliss of His grace within you. The supreme quality of Emperor Bali is his spirit of surrender and sacrifice. Emperor Bali surrendered himself totally to the divine. Under his reign, all the subjects were happy and led godly lives. Saddened by the thought of having to go away from his people, he told them, "Dear people! I cannot be without you and you cannot be without me. Every year I shall appear before you and give you joy." Onam is the day on which Bali fulfills his promise. People wake up early in the morning, take a bath, wear new dresses and worship God, and partake a feast to mark the Onam celebration. What is the significance of wearing new clothes (Vasthra)? Vasthra also means ‘heart’. Wearing new clothes (Vasthra) signifies purifying the heart. God dwells in a pure heart.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Shankaracharya, in the fifth century A.D., travelled by foot from Kerala to Kashi, Badri, Kashmir, Kedarnath, Kailash, Puri, Sringeri, etc! And he lived only until the age of thirty-two! Imagine the tremendous amount of work that he did - writing, expounding, propagating, establishing, organising, inspiring, teaching - all in about fourteen or fifteen years of active life! Activity is the verysine qua non of life. Be active, welcome activity - that is the message that God gives man at birth. The breath teaches you Soham all the time, 'so' when it goes in and 'ham,' when it is exhaled. Choose that activity which is conducive to your spiritual progress, judging yourself the stage in which you are at present. There is no high and low, in the activity. The eye must see, the ear must hear, and the hand must hold. That is their duty (Dharma). So also each of you must conduct yourself, according to your own Dharma and progress spiritually.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Pleasure is as an interval between two pains.

Without knowing pain, pleasure will not be enjoyable. Without sorrow, you will never understand the meaning of happiness. Although two aspects are always present, we should try and promote happiness. In our own body while good blood is flowing on one side, simultaneously on the other side there is impure blood. Even in our homes, we see that pure drinking water is brought from a pipe from one side, the filthy and bad drainage water is sent away by another conduit. They are both present in the same home. Similarly, in a village or city, while the drinking water is brought through certain pipes, alongside this there are pipes which carry the drainage; at times externally both look similar. So also, in our mind there are always two streams going. One is a stream of good ideas while the other is a rivulet of unholy thoughts, both flow together. You must make every attempt to accept the good and reject the bad.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

To experience divine love there is no need to practice any kind of meditation, worship or rituals. Selfless love (Prema) can be obtained only by complete absorption in spirituality. It was for this reason that Sri Krishna declared in the Gita: “Surrender unto Me, transcending all rules (Sarva Dharman Parityajya)". Likewise, Jesus also declared: "I am the Path." Buddha, conveying the same meaning, declared, "Surrender everything" (Sarvam Sharanam Gachchami). These statements clearly convey that the essence of all religions, the root of all scriptures, the goal of all virtues, is the experience of spiritual oneness and unity (Sarvatmika Bhavam). The Gopikas exemplified such a spirit of surrender and oneness. Gopikas symbolise thoughts. Radha symbolises the combination of all thoughts in the mind. So all our thoughts, desires and aspirations and our mind should merge in Krishna, represented by Prajna in a human being. Constant Integrated Awareness (Prajna) of the Divine is the significance of the Vedantic declaration, ‘Prajnanam Brahma.’

Thought for the Day

If we take a ball and pitch it on a hard ground, it will rebound to the extent determined by how hard we hit the ball on the ground. If we pitch this ball on a soft muddy ground instead of a hard surface, it will not rebound, but will get trapped and stuck in the mud. Similarly, if the pure aspect of Divinity hits a sacred heart, it rebounds. On the other hand, if we have a muddy and impure heart, even when Divinity impinges on this heart it gets stuck and entangled. Therefore, purity of one’s mind and an exemplary life are essential. Truth and honesty are to be regarded as our two eyes. Instead, if these eyes are inflicted with the disease of selfishness, then we cannot have a pure and clean heart. Young people should have purity of mind. They should take great care to protect truth and honesty.

BagavanSri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Thought for the Day

Today most people, particularly students and youth, are ruining their lives because they do not have a strong foundation of Brahmacharya (celibacy). When elders advise to sit for prayers for at least five minutes, they say they have no time, but they have all the time in the world to wallow in bad qualities and bad habits. Make every effort to build a strong foundation of Brahmacharya. Remaining a bachelor is not Brahmacharya; constant contemplation on God (Brahma) is true Brahmacharya. Think of God and chant His name under all circumstances. Lead a life of purity. Dedicate your life to the principle of love. Your life will be safe and happy. In a big mansion, you see the beautifully designed walls, the roof and the entire huge building, but you do not see the foundation. It is hidden underneath. Remember, the safety of the huge pretty mansion seen from outside rests on the unseen foundation.

Anger clouds the mind and deludes it; delusion clouds you from your Self; the senses are the root of anger.

Today people are not making proper use of their mind, effort, position and wealth (mati, gati, sthiti andsampatti). As a result, they lose the sacred energy that God has given and are also subjected to misery and grief because of evil traits like desire, anger and greed (kama, krodha and lobha). You have absolutely no control over your desires. When one desire is fulfilled, you crave for another! Anger is another evil trait which ruins people. "One with anger will not be successful in any endeavour. They will commit sins and be ridiculed by one and all," says a Telugu poem. Hatred is more dangerous than anger. It gives rise to many evil qualities which come in the way of experiencing Divinity. Do not turn into a beast by allowing these wicked qualities to overpower you. Constantly remind yourself that you are a human being and keep a check over your bestial tendencies.

Of all the branches of education, spiritual education is the true education. In comparison, spiritual education is the ocean while the other branches of education are like the rivers. When rivers go and merge in the ocean, they acquire the depth and glory of the unfathomable ocean. Similarly when all forms of education blend and merge with spiritual education, they acquire the form and grandeur of the ocean of wisdom. When your education is combined with penance (tapas), then the blossoming of your heart and the ennobling of your ideas will occur naturally. Tapas does not mean that you should give up everything and go to the forest and stand there with your head on the ground. Tapas is one, through which, you can harmonise your thought, word and deed with each other. When such a sacred type of education is given along with proper culture, great and noble ideas will blossom from within you.

Thought for the Day

Today is the sacred festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Ga symbolises intellect (buddhi), Na stands for wisdom (vijnana). So Ganapati is the master ofbuddhi and vijnana. He will bless you with good intellect and confer wisdom. Vinayaka is also called ‘Vighneshwara’ (remover of obstacles). No obstacle can come in the way of one who prays to Vinayaka. Worship of Vinayaka confers success in spiritual as well as worldly endeavours. Ganapati is also called ‘Mooshika Vahana’ (the one who has a mouse as His vehicle). You may wonder how a small mouse can carry on its back a hefty personality like Vinayaka. Here mooshika does not mean a mere mouse. It symbolises the darkness of ignorance because it is in darkness that the mouse moves about. Hence the name ‘Mooshika Vahana’ refers to the one who subdues ignorance and dispels darkness. Invest time to understand the inner significance of the Ganapati principle and worship Vinayaka on this auspicious day and receive His blessings.

Thought for the Day

If we look at the start of the Mahabharatha war in a superficial manner, we will see that Arjuna was thrown into despondence and confusion, and the opportunity required Krishna to impart the sacred Bhagavad Gita. This situation should not be described as a period of internal controversy. Arjuna did soul searching within himself to decide between truth and untruth, between propriety and impropriety. A human being’s life is transient. It is momentary, and in the context of the battlefield, Arjuna learnt to recognise the permanent truth. Lord Krishna raised the Pandavas as an exemplar so we understand the sacred heart of a devotee. Sometimes, as a result of difficulties, devotees’ hearts are immersed in sorrow. This is because of their ego and other bad qualities in their hearts coming to the surface and troubling them. To get such ego, jealousy, and unwanted traits out of the heart of devotees, God definitely intervenes and undertakes events to help them progress.

So long as a person is immersed in body attachment, all types of hardships and misery will haunt. Body attachment is the root cause of thoughts (sankalpas). Hence Lord Krishna exhorted people to give up body attachment. The key derivation from this statement is that every being should experience unity in diversity. Without an individual (vyashti), there cannot be a society (samashti). Without a society, there is no creation (srishti). So all these are connected, and we must first clearly recognise the role of an individual (vyashti). Only then can we understand the principle of samashti, which will in turn lead to the understanding of srishti. One who understands srishti becomes one with paramesthi (God).Vyashti symbolises the individual whereas Samashti stands for God. So long as vyashti identifies themselves with the body, they lead a very ordinary life. Shed the body attachment, then you will find that the individual soul is indeed one with the Cosmic Spirit.

Thought for the Day

The food we eat determines the smell of the belch that follows. The taste of bread that we prepare depends on the kind of flour we use. If you sow seeds in an infertile land, they will not sprout and yield a rich harvest. So also in a person who has dull or evil (rajasic) qualities in their heart, virtuous and pious qualities like worshipping the Lord or compassion cannot flourish. It is therefore necessary for a person to do such things through which the field of their heart can be purified and cleansed. Therefore take courage and move forward on the noble path in the journey of life. The kind of work we engage in will determine the kind of fruits that we get. Hence Lord Krishna has taught in the Gita that the purity of work (karma) is extremely important. Remember God never teaches or does something which does not have deeper spiritual meaning for our well-being.
