If you honour your mother, the Mother of the universe will guard you against harm.

People have specialised in various methods of worshipping God; there is a host of ceremonies, hymns, festivals, fasts, vows, pilgrimages, etc., but the best form of worship that will draw God’s grace in ample measure is obedience to His commands. Adulation is poor adoration! Placing God at a great distance from you and praising Him as Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent will not please Him. Develop nearness and kinship with God. Win Him by obedience, loyalty, humility and purity. Make your lives simple; fill the daily tasks with love and mutual cooperation; be tolerant towards the errors and failings of others; look upon them with empathy and understanding, and be calm under all conditions. Then, you and your country will certainly be very happy. Your sentiments will be unselfish and your emotions, tender. Envy, hatred and vindictiveness can gain no entrance into the stronghold of your mind where mercy, benevolence and indulgence stand guard.

Thought for the Day

You may have a picture of Sai Baba before you, or an image in metal or an idol in stone. But, if you have faith that He is alive and present in it, and that He is in your heart and in the hearts of all beings, then you get the ecstasy of the knowledge that He is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. The Divine is a wine, that would intoxicate you. It is produced by the nectar that the name of the Lord is saturated in. Taste it and you forget everything else; you are transformed. Ramakrishna used to cry in agony at the loss of another day, without the vision of the Divine Mother. Have that yearning; feel that sense of urgency: Seek to know now, yearn for that ecstasy this moment. Do not postpone or spend time in discussing others.

Self-confidence is very essential. This is the foundation on which you must raise the walls of self-sacrifice. You have to therefore lay, first of all, the foundation of self-confidence and build the mansion of self-satisfaction and self-sacrifice. Then you ultimately attain self-realisation. But people do not possess such steady self-confidence. What is the reason? Their mind is lost in dirty, worldly and useless desires. How long can the worldly things last? They come and go like passing clouds. Today students are trained in such education which fosters desires. Along with this education, you must foster human values. Human values are not something that you need to acquire anew. They are born with you and are innate in you. As they are hidden within, you are unaware of them. When the safe vault of the heart is opened by the key of love, the valuable qualities of human values emerge.

Thought for the Day

Think of a car. A car has some lights. There are bulbs in the lights. Because of the bulb, you get the light. Does the bulb give the light? No! It is the electric power that goes through the bulb and gives light. We also hear the horn. The horn cannot work by itself. The horn gives the sound on the basis of the electric power. The tyres are moving, but they cannot move by themselves. It is the power of the engine that moves the tyres. The body is like a car. The eyes are the bulbs, and our mouth is like the horn. The legs are the tyres, and the mind is the engine. The intellect is the switch. Divine power is the current. Without divine power, the body cannot move. Divine power is the most important thing. The body, mind, senses, and intellect are but instruments.

Thought for the Day

A novice must start with meditation on Saguna Brahman (Divinity with attributes), and must observe all restrictions. One should be regular and punctual in one’s sadhana. A young sapling must be protected from animals; a fence must be put around it until it grows into a big tree. The fence becomes unnecessary after it becomes a huge tree. Similarly, rules and regulations are necessary for beginners in sadhana. An advanced spiritual aspirant does not depend on external props. Such a person can go into a trance at will. Meditation becomes spontaneous and habitual. Dhyana(Meditation) should be distinguished from dharana or mere concentration. The first stage of concentration should be followed up by contemplation and absorption. This absorption leads to meditation. Dhyana is not the monopoly of any particular religion. It is a universal and pragmatic programme for gaining the unitive knowledge of the Godhead.

Your spiritual practices must be accompanied by a sincere prayer from the heart!

Once a sage had a cat in his hermitage. Whenever he performed ahoma (offering oblations to gods into the consecrated fire), the cat frisked about the fire and gave a lot of trouble to him. So he caught it in advance and kept it under an inverted basket for the duration of the homa. His son who watched this operation for years thought that this cat-catching and cat-imprisonment were vital parts of the ritual itself. So he took great trouble to seek out a cat before everyhoma and felt happy when he got one which he could keep under an inverted basket in the same room. That is an example of meaningless mechanical repetition. Spiritual effort should not become mechanical repetition of set formulae or execution of dry formalities! Remember, your spiritual endeavours must be to attract the grace of God on yourselves. Your spiritual practices must be accompanied by a sincere prayer from the heart!

Thought for the Day

Become attached to God. Feel His Presence and revel in His Glory. Do not cause Him 'disappointment' or 'distress' by any act or word which He does not approve of. Do not give Him the slightest 'bother' or 'worry.' He has none, but if you love Him deeply, you will be concerned about Him as He is your Lord and Love. Jatayu had an unremitting stream of Rama thoughts and he was rewarded by Rama; He came to him in his last moments and Himself performed his last rites, a duty He did not carry out directly even for His father! God will serve you; He will save you and be by your side ever - only you have to cultivate your character and polish your interior so that He might be reflected therein. Sweetness alone is the offering that God likes. Let His Will be done - this should be your guideline!

How long can you stagnate in the same class? Have you no wish to get promoted to the next higher class? In devotion (Bhakti), there are two classes, Sahaja bhakti(Ordinary devotion) and Visesha bhakti (Special Devotion).Sahaja bhakti is satisfied with worship, bhajan, namasmarana, pooja and vrata (group singing, remembrance of Lord, austerities, ritual worship, pilgrimage, etc.). Vishesha bhakti craves for purity of character, suppression of impulses, practice of daya, prema, shanti and ahimsa (compassion, love, peace and non-violence), and inquiry into the why and wherefore of man. It is a matter of shame that people stick to the same class year in and year out. Then there is another higher class named Para bhakti too (devotion that transcends all worldliness). Cleverness can correct and solve external problems; concentrated sadhana alone can correct and solve internal crisis.

To drive a car, shape a pot on a wheel, weave a design, or weed a plot of land - all these jobs require single-minded attention. To walk along life's highway which is full of hollows and mounds, to talk to one's fellow men who are of manifold temperaments - all these also require concentration. The senses have to be reined in so that they may not distract or disturb; the brain must not go wool gathering and the emotions must not colour or discolour the objectives one seeks. That is the way to succeed in concentration. Yoga is chitta vritti nirodha - the cutting off of all agitations on the lake of one's mind. Nothing should cause a wave of emotion or passion on the calm surface or in the quiet depths of one's awareness. This state of equanimity is the hallmark of Jnana (spiritual wisdom).Sadhana (spiritual discipline) is the drug and Vichara(Inquiry) is the regimen that will cure man of all waywardness and agitation.

Embodiments of Love! You need not go in search of God; He will come in search of you. God does not reside in temples, mosques and churches. These are structures built by man. God resides in a temple that He has built for Himself, and that is the human body. The human body is a living temple, a walking temple, and a talking temple. No man-made place of worship can match this God-built temple in power and sanctity. This temple has not been built with brick and mortar. No architect has designed it, and no engineer has built it. This temple has come into existence by the will of God. You must treat your body as a precious gift of God and safeguard this sacred gift. Obey God’s command and engage only in sacred actions. Cultivate selfless love and share it as much as you can, then you will experience the sweet smelling fragrance of the Divinity (Atmic Principle).

Pure love is like a well-paved, one-way road with no speed breakers. You can rush along it to God at whatever speed you want. Rivers also illustrate this principle. All rivers speed down from mountains. They flow fast and swift to somewhere. Where to? To the ocean. In the process, they go over boulders and rocks, skilfully avoiding obstacles on the way. They never stop, but keep moving all the time towards the goal. Life must be a river rushing towards the ocean called God. The flow should never stop or falter. Overcoming all obstacles, you must keep rushing towards God. That must be the characteristic of your spiritual journey. Be strong-willed, resolute, determined, and sincere. There should be no room whatsoever for despair, depression or weakness of any sort. Correct your vision and what you hear, introspect your thoughts and feelings, and ensure your actions are noble and good. Then, you will experience nothing but bliss.

Everyone dresses well before going out, because they want to be respected. While we feel so concerned about the state of our house or clothes, the heart in which the Divine resides is utterly polluted. It is filled with unclean thoughts and impure fancies! What you are doing is concealing your thoughts, and pretending to be impeccable and externally well-dressed. Of what use is such conduct? What is the use in attaching importance to the external appearance of the body and value the respect shown to it? The one who cares only for the body and ignores the state of their mind is a two-legged animal. Honestly examine the impure state of your minds and introspect the double life you are leading, that will help you to get rid of your bad thoughts in a moment!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Difficulties are bound to come, but they also will go away, just like passing clouds.

Spiritual lessons must soak into your blood and spread every where – To remind this, God has a special name:Raso-vai-saha. It means that in every human body, God is present as the Divine Essence. This divine essence pervades the entire body, in every limb and organ. Hence, God has another name – Angeerasa (Angam - limb; Rasa - essence). Angeerasa means “One who pervades over all the limbs, soaking them with His divine power and essence”. Thus, God is within you asAngeerasa! You think you take care of yourself and protect yourself. No! Who do you think protects you when you are fast asleep and have no idea of what is happening around you? It is God who really protects you always! In fact, He cares for you at all times. Difficulties are bound to come, but they also will go away, just like passing clouds.

Embodiments of Love! You may have heard the famous Buddhist chant, “Buddham saranam gacchami, Dharmam saranam gacchami, Sangham saranam gacchami”, what does it mean? These three maxims imply that firstly, one must sharpen the intellect and the capacity for spiritual discrimination. Next, such intelligence must be used to serve the society. Thirdly, service must be based on dharma or righteousness. If these three steps are followed, you will lead a blissful life. Never harm any living creature in any way whatsoever. Help ever, hurt never – this is the essence of Buddha’s teaching. The more you love your fellow beings, the greater would be the bliss that one enjoys. The more you love others, the happier you would be. Therefore, if you wish to be constantly happy, you must always love all. Love is the royal path to God. The best way to God is to love all and serve all. This is the important lesson that Buddha taught humanity.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Embodiments of Love! Buddha Poornima is celebrated to remind us that prema (love) is the pathway to poornam(fullness). It is not enough to be happy just on Buddha Poornima. You must be able to experience bliss all the time, and you can do so by following the teachings of Buddha. Lord Buddha’s teachings are lofty, sublime, and sacred. His most important teaching is - Non-violence is the greatest of all dharma (Ahimsa paramo dharmah). Lord Buddha was a noble soul. He travelled the length and breadth of the land advising people to follow the path of divine love. Buddha disliked pomp, show and sycophancy. He was simple, ever calm, pure, humble, and always full of love and compassion. Do not merely give speeches on Buddha, it is way more important to translate Buddha’s teachings into practice. This is also the right way to show respect and reverence for Buddha. Resolve today to earnestly practice His teachings for your own well-being.

When you feed the cow with fermented gruel so that it may yield more milk, the milk emits an unpleasant smell. When one engrosses oneself too much with the trifles of the world, the conduct and character become unpleasant. It is indeed tragic to witness the downfall of the child of immortality, struggling in despair and distress. If only every one examines these: “What are my qualifications? What is my position?” They will realise their downfall. Will a tiger, however hungry, eat popcorn or groundnuts? Aim at the goal which your lineage entitles you; how can a parrot taste the sweetness of the mango if it pecks at the fruit of the cotton-tree? Let your effort align keeping up with the dignity. The goal will near you faster than the pace with which you near the goal. God is as eager to save you as you are eager to be saved; He is full of love and compassion for all who seek.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Since Islam means surrender to God, whoever lives in peace and harmony in society, in a spirit of surrender and dedication, really speaking, belongs to Islam. Islam insists on full coordination between thought, word and deed. Muslim holy men and sages have been emphasising that we must inquire into the validity of the 'I' which feels it is the body and the 'I' which feels it is the mind and reach the conclusion that the real 'I' is the Self yearning for the Omniself, God. Fasting and prayers during the month of Ramzan are specially designed to awaken and manifest this realisation. Consider any religion, whatever it may be, you will find that it emphasises on unity, harmony and equal-mindedness. Therefore, all of you must cultivate love, tolerance and compassion and demonstrate these universal principles in all your daily activities, every day. This is the Message I give you today with My Blessings.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Know that nothing against dharma can stand the presence of the Lord.

The Lord never speaks a word without relevance or significance, He never does anything without appropriateness or purpose. The young little boy, Dhruva, went to the forest to do penance and get a boon from the Lord, so that his father might treat him as lovingly as he did his half-brother. But see what happened? As he progressed in his spiritual practice, that wish was forgotten, and more lofty ones came to occupy its place. Once the Lord enters your mind, He will get rid of all evil in it. God (Rama) and desire (kama) can never coexist. God and lust will never go together. How then could the Gopis have any body consciousness when they adored young, little lad Krishna? Even mundane desires will be transmuted into higher spheres of purity when one approaches the Lord. Know that nothing against dharma can stand the presence of the Lord.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

The waters of the river might be dirty, but the devotee who sips it with a mantra or a hymn in praise of God on his lips transmutes it into sanctified water. The body becomes healthy by exercise and work; the mind becomes healthy by devout contemplation and remembrance of the divine name (namasmarana), and by regular, well-planned discipline, joyfully accepted and carried out. Nonviolence is the rice, dedication is the gram (chickpea flour), expiation are the raisins, and repentance is the jaggery (unrefined cane sugar). Mix all these well with the ghee (clarified butter) of virtue. That is the offering you should make to your chosen deity, not the paltry stuff you make out of articles obtained for a paisa in the shops! The Gopis knew this secret passage to the heart of the Lord, that is why they realised Him quickly and fast

Thought for the Day

I have heard discordant voices and whispers that if Sathya Sai Baba is really Divine, why is the Bukkapatnam water storage dry during the greater part of the year? Some of you here might have heard such statements, made by irresponsible persons who have no knowledge of the working of Cosmic Laws. It is really an absurd idea! Why should I expend My grace especially on this tank? Does proximity grant greater attachment? No! The entire Universe is Mine. All places are equally near for Me and, if they turn away from good ways, all are equally far! Nearness to God can never be measured by miles. Unless the people of this village have deposited amounts in the bank, how can the bank honour the cheques they draw? Ask yourself earnestly: Have you deposited devotion to the Lord, service to your kind, and faith in your spiritual practice? Then alone can you draw upon the Grace which is won only by such efforts!

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Be like the umpire on the football field, watching the game, judging the play according to the rules laid down, unaffected by success or reverse of this team or that.

You must be humble, but yet strong to resist temptation. Do not yield like cowards to the sly insinuations of the senses. Your time in school has to be used not only in the task of collecting information and earning certain skills that will give you an income on which you can live; it must also be used to acquire the art of being content and calm, collected and courageous. You must also cultivate at school an ardent thirst for knowing the truth of the world and of your own self. Your words must be like honey, your hearts must be as soft as butter, your outlook must be like the lamp, illumining and not confusing. Be like the umpire on the football field, watching the game, judging the play according to the rules laid down, unaffected by success or reverse of this team or that.

When Krishna danced on the head of snake Kaliya, all the poison was vomited and the serpent was subdued. Incidentally I might add, you should make your hearts as smooth and soft as the hood of the snake. When God is revered, the world and all its poisonous fumes recede and you are restored to original health. Make the name and form of your chosen Lord dance upon the hood of your heart. Krishna had no attachment to sense objects (vishayavasana), so He could plunge into the pool, jump onto the hood of snake Kaliya, trample on it and squeeze the poison out. When you are deep in the mire, how can you pull out another who has fallen into it? Do not get caught. Save yourself only by calling on God, who is free from sense objects and is on the bank. Hold His hand, and He will pull you safe and keep you steady on the hard ground.

You should have single-minded devotion towards God. Your faith should be total and unconditional. If your faith is unsteady with ‘bumps and jumps’, you will be confused and will become restless. Keep your desires under control. Limitless desires will take you away from Divinity. Annihilation of desires will lead you to the principle of unity. You should continuously develop virtues and lead a good life. Understand the purpose of education and act accordingly. Only then will your birth as a human being be meaningful. One electric bulb can provide illumination to many. Likewise, a heart filled with love can illumine many lives. The educated should not look down upon the uneducated. If they are truly educated, they will treat everyone equally and develop unity. Where there is unity, there is purity. When unity and purity are present, you are bound to experience Divinity. Love is the basis for unity. Know that if differences crop-up, pure love is absent.

From today onwards, develop noble feelings.

From today onwards, develop noble feelings. Follow the sacred path. Then your future will certainly be safe and secure. When I see all of you, My heart overflows with bliss (ananda). Happiness lies in union with God. Hence contemplate on God incessantly. Never give scope for anxiety or worry. Do not think, “Will I pass in the examinations?” Under any circumstances, do not give chance for despair and despondency. Do not have weak thoughts or negative attitude. Have faith in God. Sincere prayers to God will help you achieve anything in life. Pray earnestly every day. Take efforts to instil strong faith and devotion within you and share it with your fellow human beings. Do your duty and face any situation with courage. Then, the result is bound to be good. That will make God very happy. Love is God. Live in love. I am always with you, in you, above you and around you.

The body is the temple.

'Deho devalaya' - The body is the temple, it is said. You are going about with a temple, where God is in the innermost shrine. The body is not a mass of flesh and bone; it is a medium for mantras(sacred words or formulae) which save when meditated upon. It is a sacred instrument earned after long ages of struggle, equipped with reason and emotion, capable of being used for deliverance from grief and evil. Honour it as such and keep it in good condition, so that it might serve that high purpose; maintain it even more carefully than these brick houses, and always preserve the conviction that it is an instrument and nothing more. Use it for just the purpose for which it has been designed and given.

If you honour your mother, the Mother of the universe will guard you against harm.

To fulfil Mother Easwaramma’s three noble desires, I provided drinking water not only to Puttaparthi but to all the surrounding villages too. The small school that I established is now a big university. The small hospital that I constructed has now become a Super Speciality hospital. Mother Easwaramma shed tears of joy when she saw that her only desires were fulfilled in a grand manner. She led a life of happiness and contentment and breathed her last peacefully. The first and foremost duty of every child is to fulfil the wishes of one’s mother and make her happy. Secondly, serve all to the extent possible. You need not take up any service activity beyond your means and capacity. Thirdly, if you find your neighbours suffering, give them solace. Try to help and make them happy. This is what I expect from you. I exhort all of you to practice these three principles of service, experience bliss and share it with one and all.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

There is no love greater than mother’s love in this world.

There is no love greater than mother’s love in this world. It is imbued with immense power. But such a sacred principle of mother’s love is being neglected today. Mothers are being treated like servants. When parents grow old, they should be looked after with love and care. Instead they are being sent to old age homes. One who ill-treats his parents is bound to suffer a similar fate at the hands of his children. As is the feeling, so is the result (Yad bhavam tad bhavati). Whatever actions you do, they will come back to you as reaction, reflection and resound. Love your mother. Then you will be loved by all. As is the seed, so is the sapling. Hence, first and foremost, develop sacred and selfless love. Be careful to not taint your love with selfishness and self-interest. When everyone shares pure love with each other, the whole world will be filled with happiness, peace and joy.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Even if you acquire a number of degrees, if you lack purity of heart, you cannot be called truly educated.

Merely having a human form does not make one a human being; it is the conduct and behaviour that matters, isn’t it? In the same manner, mere acquisition of bookish knowledge does not make one truly educated. Such worldly education is negative in nature. One must make a distinction between education and educare. Education is limited to physical and mental levels. While education is information-oriented, educare is transformation-oriented. Just as the rivers like Krishna and Godavari have their source in the ocean, education has its roots in educare. Physical and worldly knowledge corresponds to education. Educare is related to our inner feelings and purity of heart. Our matta, patta and batta (speech, song, and way of life) should originate from the heart. That is the essence of educare. Even if you acquire a number of degrees, if you lack purity of heart, you cannot be called truly educated.

Bagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba

The death of mind or mergence with the Lord is called mano-nigraha.

Each one of you must make your own heart a Prasanthi Nilayam. Transformation must begin from this very moment. Analyse your words, deeds and thoughts, and get rid of the evil ones that harm you and others. Cultivate fortitude (sahana), firm peace (shanti), and speaking the truth (satya). Presently your mind flutters and squats on all and sundry objects in the Universe. It refuses to stay only on one idea - God. Like the fly that sits on fair and foul, denies itself the opportunity of sitting on a hot cinder, your mind too flees from all thoughts of God. The fly will be destroyed when it sits on fire; so too your mind will be destroyed, when it dwells on God. Desire is the very same stuff of which the mind is made; when mind becomes non-existent, you become free. Desires cease, when God seizes the mind. The death of mind or mergence with the Lord is called mano-nigraha.
