If you keep awake throughout twelve hours on Shivaratri (festival of Lord Shiva) due to illness, the vigil will not win His favour. If you quarrel with your spouse and desist from food for one full day, it will not be recorded in the book of God as a fast. Remember, no bhokta (enjoyer) can be a bhaktha (devotee); anyone with an eye on profit they derive from service to God, can never be a true devotee. People praise Rama to the skies one day and decry Him the next, when their fortune is dry. Similarly, those who declare ‘My God is great and others are small’, do not know the elements of spiritual discipline and are unfit for entering the field of spiritual service. Dhana (money) is the currency of the world; Sadhana is the currency of the spirit. The Lord looks for purity, sincerity, simplicity and steady joy in Sadhana, in the contemplation of His name and form.
