Chittirai is the month of festivals in the temples of Tamil Nadu, but the celebrations at the Sri Meenakashi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai is unique in many ways and has been celebrated since time immemorial.This festival marks the celestial wedding of the Goddess Meenakshi, the presiding deity of Madurai with Lord Sundareswarar. The festival begins with the flag hoisting and many interesting events follow, one is the `Pattabishekam' of Goddess Meenakshi. The day of the `Thirukalyanam' or celestial wedding dawns with the deities being taken out in their regal attire around the temple streets, before being brought into the grandly decorated hall inside the temple.

Meenakshi is taken around in a separate palanquin and Sundareswarar with his ever following consort Piriyavidai in another. Among the celestial dignitaries who come to attend the functions are the deities Lord Subramania and Lord Pavalakanivai Perumal from the Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy temple in Thiruparankundram, which is also one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga.

The second part of the Chittirai festival involves the Alagarkoil temple, based 14 kilometers away from Madurai, which is also the abode of Lord Sundarajaperumal who is the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. On hearing of his sister's marriage proposal, the deity leaves his abode accompanied by his cavalcades, bringing with him, dowry for his sister. Legend, has it that he took the form of Kallazhagar, at Kallanthiri before entering Madurai, in order to protect the riches he was bringing with him.Kallazhagar is given a grand welcome, by the people when he enters Madurai at Moondrumavadi and the ritual called the `Ethirsevai' is performed. He is then taken to the Thallakulam Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple, where he spends the night before leaving for his sister's abode.Early, next morning when he enters the river Vaigai to cross it to go to the wedding, he is informed that the ceremony has already taken place. Annoyed, he returns, but does not disappoint his devotees who have been looking forward to his visit. He visits the decorated sheds called the `mandahapadis' set up infront of many buildings. to welcome him. He visits approximately 392 Mandahapadis during his annual visit, he stays the night at the Vandiyur Mariamman temple.On his return, he stays at the Ramarayar Mandahapadi where he takes his ten incarnations, `Dasavatars' throughout the night. The next day he is taken out in the floral palanquin.The festival concludes with Kallazhagar returning to his abode in Alagarkoil hills.
